Well, the local connection to the Amazing Race sure didn’t last long.
Twin doctors Idries and Jamil, who previously practiced in Ottawa, were eliminated Sunday night.
I thought the doctors were going to do well — and they were one of Nora’s predictions to win — because they’re obviously smart, they seem physically fit and I assumed being twins they’d work well together.
But in the end their fear of water did them in as they struggled to complete a diving challenge before switching to another but easier water challenge. The time spent fretting about and attempting the first challenge put them so far behind they ended up coming in last place.
Hopefully the season remains entertaining despite losing our local connection. Sunday’s episode wasn’t all that enthralling, but the Race tends to get more interesting deeper into seasons.
Order of Finish

- Idries and Jamil, twin doctors (ELIMINATED)
Thumbs Up: To Connor and David for bouncing back from a dumb mistake. The father/son team failed to read the clue — a mistake I can’t believe teams make season after season — and did not grab their diving gear, which forced them to go back and created a large deficit for them. However, once they returned to the challenge, they completed it quickly enough to place second. Had they not been so careless, they likely would have placed first and won a trip to London.
Thumbs Down: To Idries and Jamil for their performance in the challenge. Jamil wanted to give up and take a penalty as soon as he realized it was a diving challenge, but Idries convinced him to try. That was noble, but trying for the twins meant dilly dallying around before hesitantly diving down. Once under water, the twins grabbed one oyster at a time instead of taking up a string full, which would have increased their odds to find the red pearls.
Best Moment: There really wasn’t any one moment that stood out, but Justina and I certainly enjoyed the scenery of Bora Bora. That’s now on my lists of places I’d like to visit.
Quote of the Week: “I’m not as young as all these young chicklets. … All the other teams are very fit. We’re old. We’re old as dirt.” Wynona as she and Chuck ran toward the first clue. This sounds like something I’d say, but I would have called the other teams whippersnappers instead of chicklets.
Question of the Week: What’s something you’d be afraid to do on the Amazing Race?
The last couple seasons have had some extreme height challenges like jumping out of plans or repelling down very tall buildings. I wouldn’t be afraid enough to contemplate not doing it, but I’d be awfully nervous.
