Youth swimming: Dolphins to compete at state

The Illinois Valley YMCA Dolphins placed fourth among 10 teams at the 2014 Northwest Jr. District and District Championships at the Kishwaukee YMCA.

The Dolphins finished with 1,907.5 points to finish behind Kishwaukee YMCA/DeKalb County (5,442.5), the Sage YMCA Piranhas (3,291) and the Rock River Valley YMCA Stingrays (2,010.5). The Ottawa YMCA Dolphins placed fifth with 1,688.5 points.

As a result of their performances at the district meet, 23 IV Dolphins and 16 IV Dolphin relay teams will compete March 21-22 at the State Championship in Pleasant Prairie, Wis.

Four IV swimmers qualified in six events.

Charleigh Holmes, of Spring Valley, won the 200-yard freestyle and 50 backstroke, placed second in the 50 free, 50 butterfly and 100 free and took third in the 100 butterfly.

Ashley Heagy, of Peru, won the 100 backstroke while also qualifying in the 200 backstroke, 200 individual medley, the 50 and 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle.

Jacob Lowery, of Peru, qualified in the 200 IM, 50 and 100 breaststroke, 50 and 100 free and 50 backstroke, while Megan Machetta, of Marseilles, qualified in the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, 200 IM and the 50, 100 and 200 free.

Utica’s Nicole Pocivasek won the 200 free, the 100 and 200 IM and the 50 butterfly at districts while also placing second in the 100 free.

Also set to compete at state are La Salle’s Dillon Malerk, Ariella Mudge, Julius Sanchez and Marissa Sanchez, Peru’s Racheal Hickey, Christopher Lowery and Mary Lowery, Utica’s Luke Mertes, Will Mertes, Keegan Miller and Jacob Pocivasek, North Utica’s Mary Mone, Wenona’s Cody Smith, Princeton’s Caden Brooks and Linnea Lee-Brown, Earlville’s Bridget McGann, Marseilles’ Laren Machetta and Varna’s Andrew Busken.
