Area college track athletes start strong in indoor

The indoor track season is in full swing, and many local athletes are off to strong starts.

At the Monmouth College Midwest Invitational Saturday, Monmouth’s Jake Barr (Sr., Mendota) won the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:23.68, which was four-tenths of a second off his lifetime best in the event.

On the women’s side, Augustana College’s Lorraine Stamberger (So., LaMoille) was part of the distance medley relay team that took first place (13:03.40). She also placed fifth in the 600 meters (1:50.56) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed seventh (4:42.12).

At the University of Dubuque Sol Bulter Classic on Jan. 12, Monmouth’s Barr finished second in the 3,000 meters (8:55.55), while Augustana’s Stamberger placed fourth in the 600 meters (1:47.21) and was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that placed second (10:09.80).

n Eastern Illinois University’s Derrick Johnson (Fr., BV) won the 3,000 meters (9:11.45) at the EIU John Craft Invite Saturday.

n Illinois State University’s Kendall Rush (Sr., Hall) placed second in the triple jump (36-4.25) at the Wisconsin Elite Invitational Saturday. Teammate Kimi Sanden (Fr., BV) placed eighth in the 600 meters (1:43.06), while ISU’s Luke Wielgopolan (Sr., Ottawa) was eighth in the weight throw (55-6.5) and 12th in the discus (146-10).

A week earlier at the Coughlan-Malloy Cup Series hosted by Indiana State University, Rush placed third in the triple jump (37-0.25), fifth in the long jump (16-5) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed fourth (4:16.88). Sanden placed fourth in the 800 meters (2:23.07), while Wielgopolan was second in the weight throw (56-11.25).

n Northern Illinois University’s Ellen Renk (Fr., L-P) was second in the triple jump (37-2.25) and fourth in the long jump (16-11.25) at the University of Illinois Illini Open Jan. 12. She then placed sixth in the triple jump (35-8.5) and 12th in the long jump (16-8) at the University of Minnesota Jack Johnson Classic Friday and Saturday.

n The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Anthony Urbanski (So., Hall) finished second in the 800 meters (2:00.21) at the UW-Whitewater Karl Schlender Invitational Saturday.

n Campbell University’s Evan Darm (So., Marquette) placed second in the 5,000 meters (15:00.59) at the Wake Forest Invitational Saturday.

n The University of Illinois’ Hunter Mickow (Sr., Princeton) placed sixth in the mile run (4:18.20) at the Illini Classic Friday and Saturday.

n Mount Mercy University’s T.J. Mosbach (Jr., Hall) finished sixth in the 3,000 meters (9:22.26), while teammate and younger sister Liz Mosbach (Fr., Hall) placed seventh in the long jump (4.62m) and eighth in the 1,000 meters (3:28.56) at the University of Northern Iowa Open Jan. 12.

Also over the weekend at the Iowa State Open, T.J. placed 25th in the mile run (4:33.71) and 25th in the 5,000 meters (16:17.86). Liz was 22nd (1:32.72) in the 600 meters and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed 14th (4:11.28) and the distance medley relay team that placed 15th (13:32.98).

n Olivet Nazarene University’s Alex Ortiz (So., Ottawa) finished fourth in the 400 meters (1:01.99) at the Private College Invitational hosted by Carthage College Jan. 11-12. She also placed sixth in the 400 meters (1:00.67) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed seventh (4:08.68) at the Grand Valley State Mike Lints Open Saturday.

n The United States Naval Academy’s Brandon Swindler (Jr., L-P) placed fifth in the weight throw (54-3.75) at the Navy Indoor Invitational Jan. 12.

n Iowa Western Community College’s Cody Taylor (So., BV) placed 11th in the 1,000 meters (2:43.25) at the Nebraska Holiday Inn Invitational Jan. 12-13.

n North Park University’s Natalie Swanson (Fr., BV) placed fourth in the shot put (10.80m) and eighth in the weight throw (10.51m) at the Lewis University Invitational Friday.

Men’s Basketball
William Penn University’s Kevin Fay (Jr., Putnam County/IVCC) went 4-for-8 from 3-point range en route to a game-high 21 points in an 85-67 win over AIB Jan. 9. He also had two assists and two steals in the win.

Fay is averaging 11.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game and also has 38 assists, 16 steals and six blocks. William Penn is ranked No. 2 in the country in NAIA Division II. It is the highest ranking in school history.

n Judson University’s Anthony Ahlers (Sr., Putnam County) scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 75-64 loss to Purdue Calumet Saturday. He also had 17 points and five rebounds in an 82-52 win over Purdue North Central Jan. 16.

Ahlers is averaging a team-high 11.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He also has 22 assists, a team-high 12 blocks and 11 steals.

n Elmhurst College’s Taylor Baxter (Jr., Fieldcrest) is averaging 9.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He also leads the team with 52 assists and has 12 steals and four blocks.

n Sauk Valley Community College’s Jacob Fisher (Fr., Princeton) is averaging 0.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game in 12 games played. He has two assists and two steals, as well.

Women’s Basketball
Monmouth College’s Lauren Kellen (So., Mendota) is averaging 4.5 points, 1.6 assists and 1.3 rebounds per game. She also has 11 steals. Teammate Chelsea Gross (Sr., LaMoille) is averaging 1.0 points and 1.2 rebounds per game in five games played. She also has one steal.

n Benedictine University’s Michelle Batty (So., L-P) is averaging 2.8 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. She also leads the team with 34 assists and has five steals.

n Illinois Wesleyan University’s Emily Considine (So., St. Bede) is averaging 1.9 points and 1.3 rebounds in seven games played. She also has one assist.

n Lake Forest College’s Lindsay Wallaert (Sr., Hall) is averaging 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds per game to go along with six steals, two assists and a block.

n St. Bonaventure University’s Kelcie Rombach (Fr., Ottawa) is averaging 1.1 points and 0.6 rebounds per game in nine games played. She also has one assist and one steal.

n Gustavus Adolphus College’s Kelle Nett (Fr., Hall) is averaging 1.0 points and 0.8 rebounds in four games played.
