Yucus: Where's the NewsTribune?

“Where’s the NewsTribune?”

It seems this question has been popping up lately, in area gymnasiums and social media sites.

The answer is pretty simple.

Really, we’re everywhere.

With a coverage area that includes 14 high schools — all the way from Bureau Valley in Manlius to Fieldcrest in Minonk — the NT Sports department spends more time working on the road than a Willie Nelson cover band.

Last week alone we covered wrestling meets in La Salle, Princeton and Mendota, boys basketball games at St. Bede, Mendota (twice), Ottawa, Henry and Streator, girls basketball games at Granville, Princeton, Ottawa and Streator, not to mention a men’s/women’s IVCC hoops doubleheader in Oglesby and the Cavalier Classic bowling tournament in Peru.

That’s an awful lot of area sports coverage in six days (not including features and roundups).

Still, there are those out there who feel they have gotten the short end of the stick already this winter (even though the new sports season is less than a month old). Tweets have been tweeted, petitions to cancel subscriptions passed around, and angry phone calls made to the office demanding more coverage.

As part of a team that takes its job very seriously, it’s enough to make your humble narrator scratch his head. No, scratch that — I’m mad.

To the folks from Mendota that called in saying we’re never there to cover the Trojans and Lady Trojans, really? Maybe you missed the big bulletin board outside the gym. The one with all the articles cut out from the NewsTribune and other area papers? I know that I saw it last Friday after the boys basketball game.

To the tech-savvy Red Devil fans that take to the internet to whine, really? Take a lesson from @coachfil22 and use your Twitter accounts for fun. (Plus, it looks kind of silly when you ask where we are when we’re sitting right behind you in Red Devil Gymnasium, notebook in hand.)

To the petition passers at L-P wrestling, really? Did you feel at all awkward handing around a petition urging Cavalier fans to cancel their paper due to lack of coverage — directly in front of a NT sports writer covering the meet? Maybe you should find a way to channel your sense of civic duty toward a real cause.

I could go on to explain how there’s a limited amount of people (three full-time and two-part time) covering a incredibly large number of contests, and how it’s not mathematically possible or fiscally responsible to cover every single game for every team — especially far-away road contests — with complex statistics, graphs and flowcharts, but this is really pretty simple so I’ll keep it short. (And I’m not sure if my editor will axe this column).

We do the very best we can to bring you a ton of area sports coverage. Seriously. If we don’t cover your team’s game, meet or match it’s because we’re covering something else.

So never fear, those feeling neglected, you’ll be seeing us around soon enough, I promise. I only ask one thing in return — make sure to take a good long look around the gym the next time you ask “Where’s the NewsTribune?”
