Hall football beats Kewanee, earns first victory

Brad Martin
NewsTribune Sports Writer

Two years is a long time to go without a home victory, but come this morning only one number will matter and this is one.

As in one victory finally in the record books for Hall and first year-coach Randy Tieman as the Red Devils thumped the Kewanee Boilermakers 48-18 behind an amazing night from senior running back Landon Piccatto.

“It’s great to finally get a win,” Tieman said. “I thought it would come a little earlier than this, but it feels really great to get the monkey off our back.”

It didn’t take long for the Red Devils to take control of the Big Rivers Conference contest as Piccatto broke free for a 53-yard touchdown run to go up 7-0.

Two possessions later, Piccatto got the Red Devils back into the scoring mix again with a 30-yard run down to the 1-yard line to set up an Aaron Kerr touchdown run that made it a 14-0 game.

The Red Devils’ defense picked up another Boilermakers fumble and Piccatto helped Hall capitalize as he used his quickness and good blocking for a 17-yard touchdown run that gave the Red Devils a 20-0 lead.

“I have to give credit to the offensive line,” said Piccatto, who finished with 344 yards and four touchdowns. “Every one of those yards is because of those guys.”

Kewanee went to the passing game and for a time was very effective with it as David Washburn found a wide open Trayvon Taylor for a 69-yard touchdown followed minutes later by Washburn’s 2-yard touchdown run to make it a 20-14 Hall lead at halftime.

Piccatto got the Red Devils offense started once again in the second half with runs of 25 and 13 yards before Kerr scored his second touchdown of the game.

On the ensuing kickoff, Kewanee’s Austin Vervynck raced 79 yards for a touchdown.

Less than three minutes later, Piccatto again used his speed to blast up the middle untouched for a 60-yard touchdown and a 34-18 lead.

Piccatto and Alex Olivares rounded out the scoring for the Red Devils, giving Hall the 48-18 victory.

Hall (1-7, 1-7 BRC) finishes off the season Friday by traveling to Port Byron to face Riverdale (0-8, 0-8). Kewanee fell to 1-7.
