LaMOILLE — LaMoille senior Shiela Browning knew she wanted to play college sports.
She just didn’t know which of her three sports she would continue.
Then came Sauk Valley volleyball coach Jay Howell, who offered her the opportunity to play for the Skyhawks.
“It is awesome because I wanted to keep on with sports,” Browning said about the opportunity to play college volleyball. “I wasn’t sure which one to continue with, but volleyball gave me the opportunity to keep going. It was great.”
Browning signed with Sauk Valley on Wednesday. She chose Sauk Valley over fellow Arrowhead Conference member IVCC.
“Sauk felt like more of a fit for me,” Browning said. “It’s a very comfortable school. I’ve gone to some open gyms with the team and I really like the atmosphere.”
Howell said Browning will play outside hitter and possibly some middle hitter for the Skyhawks.
“We’re real excited to have her,” Howell said. “She’s just a super athlete. I followed her high school career. She brings a lot athleticism and enthusiasm. Any coach would like to have that on the floor.”
As a senior, Browning led the area in kills at 3.6 per game and was a NewsTribune Third-Team All-Area pick.
LaMoille-Ohio coach Hallie May said Browning is the first Lady Lion to sign with a college during her six-year tenure.
“I’m really proud of her,” May said. “She sets a great example for the other girls on the team of what it takes to go to the next level. I hope the girls continue to look t her as an example to work hard.”
