College Check-up: Schwab shines in tournament

Several area athletes have had some sizzling performances in the past couple weeks.

William Penn University’s Alec Schwab (Jr., St. Bede/IVCC) was named to the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball All-Championship Team after averaging 30.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game during the NAIA National Tournament. He also had nine steals and two assists, shot 46 percent from the field — including 42 percent from three-point range — and was 34-for-39 from the free throw line (87 percent) during William Penn’s tournament run.

Schwab started the tournament by scoring 27 points and grabbing nine rebounds as No. 27-seeded William Penn upset No. 6-seeded Dordt 118-116 in double overtime March 13. He also had five steals and an assist in the win.

He then put up his third 40-point performance of the season when he scored 42 points to help the Statesmen to a 106-83 win over St. Thomas March 14 in the second round of the tournament. He also had six rebounds and a steal. Schwab became just the second player in program history to score 40 points three times in his career.

But William Penn’s Cinderella story came to an end with a 79-78 loss to No. 19-seeded Robert Morris March 15. Schwab had 22 points, four rebounds, three steals and an assist in the loss, which ended William Penn’s season at 24-10. Schwab finished the year averaging 17.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game with 43 assists, 37 steals and four blocks.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Anthony Urbanski (Jr., Hall) earned Division III All-American status after being part of the distance medley relay team that placed third at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lincoln, Neb., March 14-15. The relay team smashed the school record with a time of 9:57.87.

Grinnell College’s Lydia Stariha (Fr., St. Bede) hit .545 on her squad’s seven-game trip to Arizona and was named the Midwest Conference Softball Performer of the Week for her efforts. She was 12-for-22 at the plate with a run scored.

Basketball
St. Bonaventure University’s Kelcie Rombach (So., Ottawa) played seven minutes in the Bonnies’ 81-62 win over Charlotte in the opening round of the Women’s NIT Friday. She also had two points, one rebound and one assist in 13 minutes played in a 76-65 second-round loss to Bowling Green Monday.

St. Bonaventure ended the season 24-11. Rombach finished the year averaging 1.5 points and 0.9 rebounds per game with 13 assists, five steals and two blocks.

Baseball
Illinois State University’s Dave Suarez (Sr., L-P) is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in 13 innings pitched with two saves, five walks, and 17 strikeouts.

Heartland Community College’s Joey Ceja (So., Marquette) is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings pitched with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Valparaiso University’s Karch Kowalczyk (Sr., L-P) is 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 6 2/3 innings pitched with five saves, three walks and seven strikeouts. He is also hitting .177 with three doubles, three home runs and a team-leading 16 RBI.
Teammate Jason Condit (Jr., Henry) is 0-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 5 2/3 innings pitched with no walks and one strikeout.

Southern Illinois University’s Lee Weld (RS Sr., Fieldcrest) got the win in a 5-4 win over Purdue in 16 innings Saturday. He pitched one inning and didn’t allow a hit. Weld is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 6 1/3 innings pitched with five walks and three strikeouts.

Upper Iowa University’s Cody Booker (So., L-P) is hitting .333 with a double and an RBI, while teammate Brett Fanning (Fr., Hall) is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in eight innings pitched with two walks and three strikeouts.

Monmouth College’s Andrew Baudino (Sr., Ottawa) is hitting .294 with two doubles and an RBI.

Roosevelt University’s Nathan Greene (Sr., Ottawa/IVCC) is hitting .294 with four RBI and five runs scored.

Danville Area Community College’s Brazon Wheeler (Fr., Ottawa) is hitting .300 with a double and four RBI.

St. Ambrose University’s Michael Lynch (So. L-P) is 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 4 1/3 innings pitched with a walk and two strikeouts.

South Dakota State University’s Reid Clary (Jr., Princeton) is hitting .200 with two doubles and two RBI.

Elmhurst College’s Tom Pumo (So., Marquette) is hitting .250 with a double, a triple and eight RBI.

Kaskaskia College’s Xavier Warren (Fr., Putnam County) is hitting .237 with two doubles and four RBI.

North Park University’s Zak Worsley (Jr., Marquette) is hitting .231 with three doubles and four RBI.

Eureka College’s Nate Louis (Sr., Henry) is hitting .211 with a double and an RBI.

Rockford College’s Kyle Pisano (Sr., L-P) is 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 14 innings pitched with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Teammate Michael Murray (So., Princeton) is 0-1 with an 8.71 ERA in 10 1/3 innings pitched with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

McKendree University’s Josh Tonozzi (So., Putnam County) is 0-2 with a 6.14 ERA in 7 1/3 innings pitched with three walks and six strikeouts.

Parkland College’s Jake Sale (So., Putnam County) is 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in five innings pitched with four walks and five strikeouts.

Lindenwood University-Belleville’s Bret Storm (Fr., L-P) is hitting .350 with 11 walks and eight stolen bases at the JV level in nine games played.

Golf
Central College’s Jon Prescott (Jr., Mendota) tied for medalist honors after shooting a 70 (35-35) at the University of Illinois-Springfield Spring Invitational March 15-16. He also tied for 14th with a score of 81 (40-41) at the Hurricane Fusillade Challenge in Bunn, N.C., Friday.

Illinois Central College’s Bobby McBride (Fr., Henry) tied for 52nd with a three-round score of 243 (80-89-74) at the 13th Annual Ron Marshall Spring Fling over the weekend in Scottsboro, Ala.

Illinois Wesleyan University’s Ali Stevenson (Jr., Ottawa) tied for 67th (87-84-88) at the Jekyll Island (Ga.) Women’s Collegiate Tournament March 14-16.

Ashford University’s Alizabeth Fiorini (So., Princeton) shot a 99 (53-46) to finish 40th at the University of Illinois-Springfield Spring Invitational March 15-16.

Softball
North Central College’s Amanda Walker (So., Ottawa) is hitting .316 with a double and two RBI.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Katie Schultz (So., Fieldcrest) is hitting .313 with a double, an RBI and five runs scored.

Trinity Christian College’s Anna Phillips (Jr., BV) is hitting .303 with a double, an RBI and nine runs scored.

Quincy University’s Lindsey Greene (Fr., Ottawa) is hitting .280 with six doubles, a triple and two home runs with 12 RBI.

Bradley University’s Brittany Burgess (Jr., St. Bede) is hitting .254 with a double and five RBI.

Beloit College’s Bethany Stavrakas (So., St. Bede) is hitting .250 with a double and an RBI.

Iowa Wesleyan College’s Sam Shepard (Jr., BV) is hitting .233 with a double, a triple and six RBI.

Illinois State University’s Kelsey Turczyn (Jr., L-P) is hitting .200 with a double and five runs scored.

Lewis University’s Lainie Schweickert (Fr., St. Bede) is 3-2 with a 3.15 ERA in 40 innings pitched. She has 36 walks and 39 strikeouts.

Millikin University’s Rachel Kindred (Jr., Ottawa) is hitting .244 with two doubles and five RBI.

Southeastern (Iowa) Community College’s Jaleesa Kindred (Fr., Ottawa) is 2-6 with a 4.20 ERA in 60 innings pitched with 10 walks and 16 strikeouts. She is also hitting .071 with an RBI in 14 at-bats.

Lincoln College catcher Taylor Hewitt (So., BV) had three hits in a doubleheader loss to Heartland College March 20 and an RBI and a runner thrown out in a doubleheader loss to Lincoln Land Saturday.

Carl Sandburg College’s Tesha Woolley (So., Princeton) has scored a run in three games played this season.

Track and Field
Augustana College’s Lorraine Stamberger (Jr., LaMoille) placed 12th in the mile run (5:34.13) and was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that placed third (10:38.87) at the Rhodes Invitational Saturday.

On the men’s side, Mount Mercy University’s T.J. Mosbach (Sr., Hall) placed 13th in the 5,000 meters (16:03.14).

Campbell University’s Evan Darm (Jr., Marquette) placed third in the 5,000 meters (15:15.77) at the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Invitational March 14-15.

King College’s Tom Lamkin (Jr., Mendota) placed 26th in the hammer throw (135-4) and 31st in the discus (122-5) at the Charlotte 49er Classic over the weekend.
n North Park University’s Natalie Swanson (So., BV) placed third in the shot put (36-9) and eighth in the discus (120-1) at the Saint Joseph’s College Gene and Rose Edmonds Invitational Saturday.

The United States Naval Academy’s Brandon Swindler (Sr., L-P) placed fifth in the hammer throw (161-10) at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge March 15.

St. Norbert College’s Taylor Miller (So., St. Bede) placed 32nd in the mile run (5:34.34) and was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that placed 14th (10:24.58) at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C., over the weekend.

Tennis
Aurora University’s Jake Lipka (Fr., L-P) picked up a 5-4 win at No. 2 doubles and a 10-3 win at No. 5 singles in a 9-0 win over Waubonsee Community College March 20. He also earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles in an 8-1 loss to North Central College March 8.

Illinois Wesleyan University’s Aaron Guenther (Sr., Ottawa) won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles in a 7-2 loss to St. Scholastica in Orlando, Fla., March 11. He is 1-4 in singles play and 4-8 in doubles action this season.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy’s Andy Sickley (So., L-P) won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles in a 7-2 loss to Springfield College at Hilton Head Island Resort in South Carolina March 16. He also won 8-0 at No. 2 singles in an 8-1 loss to Farleigh Dickinson March 20.

Bowling
The St. Ambrose University men’s bowling team finished fifth overall with a total of 12,031 pins over 64 games at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships Sectional Qualifier March 15-16. Blake Pohl (So., Mendota) is a member of the team.
On the women’s side, Robert Morris University-Peoria finished ninth overall with a total of 11,866 pins over 64 games. Ivy Martinez (Sr., L-P) is a member of the team.
