Daniel Close, Ottawa Year: Junior Weight: 145 Season highlights: Despite suffering through a handful of injuries, the junior still had an outstanding season. Close finished the year 29-10, won a conference title, placed second at the regional, won a sectional title and was sixth at state to earn his second straight medal.
Alec Freschi, La Salle-Peru Year: Senior Weight: 152 Season highlights: The team captain went 29-10. The four-year varsity wrestler placed second at the Rockford East tournament and third at the Springfield Invitational. Freschi also finished fifth at the NIB 12 Tournament and was second at the regional.
Alex Fuentes, Ottawa Year: Senior Weight: 195 Season highlights: After the Pirate star earned a state medal last season, he repeated the feat this year as he once again finished sixth at state. Fuentes also won a regional title, placed third at the sectional and finished the year with a 29-8 record.
Collin Groleau, La Salle-Peru Year: Sophomore Weight: 145 Season highlights: A repeat member to the NT All-Area team, Groleau had another solid season. The sophomore went 29-12 and placed second at the Rockford East and Springfield tournaments. He also finished fourth at both the NIB 12 Meet and at the regional.
Jon Hewitt, La Salle-Peru Year: Senior Weight: 285 Season highlights: After missing most of his junior season due to an injury, the heavyweight rebounded to post a 25-15 record. Hewitt placed third at the conference meet, won a regional title and placed fourth at the sectional to qualify for his first state tournament.
Devon Jones, Ottawa Year: Senior Weight: 138 Season highlights: A repeat member to the NT All-Area Team, Jones had a memorable season. The senior finished the year 30-11 - the second most wins by an Ottawa wrestler - placed third at the Princeton Invitational and second at the regional.
Micah Krueger, Ottawa Year: Freshman Weight: 113 Season highlights: The Ottawa grappler made quite the impact in his freshman season. Krueger finished the year with a 28-15 record, placed third at the regional and at the sectional was a win away from advancing to state but was a state alternate.
Max Kurkowski, La Salle-Peru Year: Junior Weight: 120 Season highlights: The Cavalier grappler finished strong as he placed third at the sectional to advance to his first state tournament. Kurkowski finished the season 25-16, won a regional title, placed fifth at the conference meet and third at the Springfield Invitational.
Cyrano Rayfield, Ottawa Year: Senior Weight: 220 Season highlights: The University of Mary football recruit rolled through the postseason as he won a NIB 12 title, a regional title and a sectional title before he finished a team-best fifth at state. Rayfield had a 38-4 record, which was the second most wins in the area.
Riley Sweetland, La Salle-Peru Year: Senior Weight: 113 Season highlights: The team captain broke through this season and finished third at the sectional to advance to his first state meet. A repeat member to the NT All-Area Team, Sweetland finished with a 31-8 record, won a regional title and placed fourth at the NIB 12 Meet.
Paul Turner, Ottawa Year: Junior Weight: 182 Season highlights: After a strong regular season, Turner wrestled his best in the postseason. The junior finished fifth at the NIB 12 Meet, placed second at the regional and was fourth at the sectional to qualify for his first state meet. He finished the year with a 25-17 record.
Jakob Weiss, Ottawa Year: Sophomore Weight: 106 Season highlights: After having a strong freshman season at Marquette , Weiss transferred to Ottawa and had a standout season. The sophomore finished the year 25-13, placed third at the regional and at the sectional was a win away from qualifying for state.
Austin Wetsel, Princeton Year: Freshman Weight: 120 Season highlights: The Tiger freshman made quite the impact this season as he finished with a 30-14 record and placed second at the Class 1A Polo Regional. Wetsel led PHS with the most three-point near falls, reversals and tied for the team lead for takedowns.
Jacob Wever, La Salle-Peru Year: Senior Weight: 132 Season highlights: The 2013-14 NT Wrestler of the Year went 39-8 and finished an area-best fourth at the IHSA State Tournament to bring home his second straight state medal. The team captain also finished second at conference, the regional and the sectional.
