2/14/2014 10:50:00 AM L-P girls basketball downs Sterling
Rick LaFollette Sports Writer
The La Salle-Peru girls basketball team nearly let a double-digit fourth-quarter lead get away Thursday against Sterling, but late free throws from junior Jena Argubright and sophomore Abbie Senica helped the Lady Cavaliers nail down a 57-51 Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division Senior Night victory in the regular-season finale.
It was L-P’s first win over Sterling since 1999.
“I challenged the girls tonight to go all out, and they did,” L-P coach Hollis Vickery said. “They met the challenge and just never let up. When a few things went wrong for them, they picked themselves up and went back at it.”
With a little more than four minutes left in the game, the Lady Cavs (13-15, 3-7 NIB 12 West) enjoyed a 49-37 lead, but back-to-back baskets by Sterling’s Kaitlyn Bauer and Kiarra Harris cut the L-P lead to 49-41.
However, the Lady Cavs stuck with it and two free throws from Senica pushed the L-P advantage back to 55-45 with 59 seconds to play.
Unfortunately for L-P, Sterling never let up and went on a 6-0 run to pull to 55-51. However, but Argubright came through in the clutch as she hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the Lady Cavs’ win.
“L-P did a great job,” Sterling coach Julie Schroeder said. “They came out and stopped everything we wanted to do. Plus, we just weren’t ready to play tonight, and it really showed, while L-P’s effort was superb.”
L-P sophomore Hannah Wolfe scored a team-high 15 points, while Argubright added 14 points, including shooting 6-for-10 from the foul line.
Had it not been for Bauer, Sterling (18-11, 6-3 NIB 12 West) would have had a really tough night, but the senior kept the Warriors in the game in the first half as she scored Sterling’s first 14 points, including all of the Lady Golden Warriors’ first-quarter points. No other Sterling player scored until Harris converted on a putback with 5:37 left in the second period.
Despite Bauer’s efforts, the Lady Cavs took the lead for good at 22-20 when Wolfe hit a bucket underneath with 1:30 left in the first half.
Bauer led all scorers with 23 points, 16 of which came in the first half.
“She was cutting to the basket good,” Vickery said of Bauer. “She has a nose for the ball. We talked about it at halftime. We needed to front her and keep a body on her.”
Notes: Before the game, L-P honored seniors Meiya Carter and Sara Shan. … Senica delighted the crowd when she sank a half-court shot at the third-quarter buzzer. … L-P split the night as it won the sophomore game 55-35. Riley Brovelli poured in 20 points and Lauren Tomasson added 17 points for the Lady Cavs (19-4), which clinched the NIB 12 West sophomore title with the win. See B3 for a team photo.
