Sports Notes: Special Olympics holding basketball skills competition

The Starved Rock Area Special Olympics Committee is holding an Individual Basketball Skills competition Saturday at Putnam County High School in Granville.

Opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited and there is no admission fee.

There will be 65 athletes from Bureau, Grundy, Henry, La Salle, Putnam and Stark counties participating.

YMCA having youth basketball league
The Illinois Valley YMCA’s boys and girls basketball league for players ages 6-10 starts Saturday.

It is a six-week league with practices at 4 p.m. Thursdays.

The cost is $30 for members and $40 for non-members.

IVCC holding basketball promotions
The IVCC basketball programs have several promotions coming up.

Thursday is “Pack the Gym” night against Carl Sandburg. The women’s game is at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow.

Other upcoming promotions are “Applebee’s Giveaway Night” for the men’s game at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21, “Faculty and Streator High School Pep Band Night” for the doubleheader against Kishwaukee at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 28 and “Black Out Night” is Feb. 3 for the 5:30 p.m. doubleheader against Sauk Valley.

Pitching/catching camp being held at PC
Controlled Chaos Baseball will hold a pitching and catching camp Jan. 26 at Putnam County High School in Granville.

Players in grades 4-8 will have camp from 1-3 p.m. and players in grades 9-12 will have camp from 3-5 p.m.

Pitchers will work one-on-one with Parkland College pitching coach and Philadelphia Phillies scout Travis Webb, while catchers will work one-on-one with Parkland head coach Dave Garcia.

Catchers must bring their own equipment and catcher’s mitt.
The cost is $70 per player.

YMCA men’s basketball league starts Jan. 29
The Illinois YMCA’s men’s basketball league begins Jan. 29.

Games will be played Wednesday nights. There will be seven weeks of games followed by a two-week tournament. Championship games will be played March 26.

There will be elite and recreational divisions.

Teams are allowed up to 12 players.

The team fee is $325 and there is a $20 fee for non members.

A mandatory captains meeting will take place at 5 p.m. Jan. 29.

Local ASA team looking for players
A local ASA team is looking for players to fill out its 14-and-under roster.
Players must have been borth in 1999 or 2000.

Ottawa Hall of Fame tickets on sale
Tickets for the Ottawa Hall of Fame ceremony are available in the OTHS main office during school hours and at all boys varsity basketball games in January.

The ceremony is 6 p.m. Feb. 8. Dinner will be in the OTHS cafeteria followed by the ceremony in the auditorium.
