Area collegiate basketball players have had strong starts to 2014.
Elmhurst College’s Taylor Baxter (Sr., Fieldcrest) scored a team-high 15 points and had three rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 104-73 loss to Illinois Wesleyan Jan. 4. He also scored 11 points and had six assists, three rebounds and a steal in a 69-64 win over Millikin Sunday. Baxter is averaging 8.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game with 28 assists, 11 steals and one block.
Sauk Valley Community College’s Mo Dean (Fr., St. Bede) scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds in an 82-53 win over Kennedy-King College Sunday. She is averaging 14.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game with 25 blocks, 21 assists and nine steals.
Benedictine University’s Michelle Batty (Jr., L-P) had 12 points and six rebounds in a 74-60 win over Marian University Jan. 4. She is averaging 4.4 points and 2.3 rebounds per game with 13 assists and five steals.
Judson University’s Emily Ragsdale (Jr., Ottawa) had 11 points and five rebounds in a 73-46 win over Silver Lake College Jan. 4. She is averaging 5.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and also has 16 assists, a team-high 13 blocks and 13 steals.
Sauk Valley Community College’s Jacob Fisher (So., Princeton) had 10 points and two rebounds in a 78-68 win over IVCC Jan. 9. He is averaging 5.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game with 13 steals, eight assists and two blocks.
William Penn University’s Kevin Fay (Sr., Putnam County/IVCC) is averaging 12.8 points and 2.7 rebounds per game and also has 10 steals, nine assists and a block. Teammate Alec Schwab (Jr., St. Bede/IVCC) is averaging 10.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game with 25 assists, 13 steals and three blocks.
Grinnell College’s Lydia Stariha (Fr., St. Bede) is averaging 4.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per game with nine assists and four steals.
Monmouth College’s Reed Goodbred (So., Earlville) is averaging 3.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per game with four assists and a block.
St. Bonaventure University’s Kelcie Rombach (So., Ottawa) is averaging 2.2 points and 0.9 rebounds per game with nine assists, four steals and two blocks.
Gustavus Adolphus College’s Kelle Nett (So., Hall) is averaging 1.5 points and 2.8 rebounds per game with two assists, two steals and a block.
Indoor Track and Field
Lewis University’s Phoenix Smallwood (Fr., Princeton) won the long jump with a leap of 5.37 meters and placed eighth in the 200 meters (28.35) at the Lewis Open Saturday. On the men’s side, Lewis University’s James Weissensel (So., Marquette) placed sixth in the 1,000 meters (2:44.29) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed third (3:46.29) and the distance medley relay team that placed third (11:17.64).
Mount Mercy University’s Liz Mosbach (So., Hall) placed fourth in the long jump (15-11.5) and was part of the sprint medley relay team that placed second (4:30.22), and the 1,600-meter relay team that placed fifth (4:21.54) at the Wartburg Relays Saturday.
King College’s Tom Lamkin (Jr., Mendota) placed 13th in the weight throw (39-8) at the Wake Forest Invitational Sunday.
The University of Wisconsin’s Ethan Armstrong (RS Sr., Ottawa) finished the season third on the team in tackles with 51 - 33 solo and 18 assisted - and had two sacks and two fumble recoveries this season. Wisconsin finished the year 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten.
