LaChance: 12 Days of Christmas

Tis’ the season to be holy, jolly and listen to as much Christmas music as possible before it hibernates for 11 months.

When the festive tunes are playing some people are lip sinking, others carol, most smile and a select few  turn the radio station a couple of days into the holiday season because they’ve had enough.

Everyone calls them Grinch.

This year, when I heard 12 Days of Christmas on a TV commercial, it inspired me to write my own lyrics to the legendary song.

However, as a sports writer I am more inclined to think I have 12 days of basketball tournaments, wrestling meets and bowling events rather than Christmas gifts or plans.

With that said, it was only fitting to do a combo platter and make an Illinois Valley sports version of the classic holiday song.

On the twelve days of Christmas my true Illinois Valley sports love gave to me...

12. Laura Sickley jumpers

11. Consecutive Lady Panther wins

10. Points and boards for a John Carroll double-double

9. Tessa Holland field goals

8. No look Ryan Reeder passes

700 bowling series from Kaitlyn Padgett

6. Points for a Max Kurkowski pin

5. Andrew Pyszka blocked shots

4. Starting Lady Trojan juniors

3’s from every L-P Cavalier

2. Cooper coaches

And a buzzer beater for the win.

Note: Repeating each previous day when a new day is introduced is strictly for song and extremely tedious and inconvenient for a newspaper.

Hopefully this new jingle will get stuck in your head as much as the original version and find its way to your everyday hum list like it did mine.

This time just think double-doubles instead of drummers drumming and a buzzer beater instead of a partridge in a pear tree.

Let’s face it, we’re bound to see more of the Illinois Valley sports list than the things in 12 Days of Christmas. That’s the way holiday cheer should be — spread with sport.

Merry Christmas
