Briefs: Tonica basketball to play at state

The Tonica eighth-grade girls basketball team will play in the IESA state tournament this weekend at Clinton Junior High in Clinton.

Tonica (23-0) will play Lincoln West-Lincoln Broadwell (19-2) at 10 a.m. Saturday in the 8-1A state quarterfinal. The winner will play in the state semifinal at 5 p.m. Saturday. The state title game and third-place game will both be held on Thursday.

Marseilles tourney releases seeds
The Putnam County boys basketball team received the top seed at this year’s Marseilles Holiday Tournament.

Dwight earned the No. 2 seed, Hall the No. 5 seed and Marquette the No. 8 seed. Other local teams the 16-team, four-day tournament include LaMoille-Ohio and Leland-Earlville.

The tournament runs from Dec. 26-30.

MHS gets top seed at Lady Bruins
The Mendota girls basketball team received the No. 1 seed at the Lady Bruins Christmas Classic when the seeds and pairings were released Thursday.

Fieldcrest earned the No. 2 seed, while Seneca got the No. 3 and Kewanee the No. 4. Other local teams included fifth-seeded St. Bede, seventh-seeded LaMoille-Ohio, eighth-seeded Henry and No. 10-seeded Princeton.

The tournament starts Dec. 21 and concludes Dec. 28.

Oglesby Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot Contest
The Oglesby Elks Lodge #2360 Hoop Shoot Contest was held Dec. 8 at the IVCC gym.

Advancing to the district competition on Jan. 19 at Princeton High School were Hunter Smith of Grand Ridge, Josie Walter of Oglesby Washington, Renn Ludford and Caden Valenzuela of Waltham, Lauren Klein of Oglesby Lincoln and Logan Ulrich of Holy Family.
