College Check-Up: Area golfers playing well

With the temperatures cooling down, area golfers are winding down the fall season with strong finishes.

Benedictine University’s Bailey Weber (So., Marquette) placed 15th overall to lead her squad at the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championships Saturday through Monday. She carded a three-round score of 245 (48-102-95). The first day of competition was shortened to nine holes due to inclement weather.

Weber also shot a 110 at the Aurora Invitational on Sept. 30.

Illinois Wesleyan University’s Ali Stevenson (Jr., Ottawa) tied for 17th with a two-round score of 173 (84-89) at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships. The third round was not played because of soggy course conditions.

Central College’s Jon Prescott (Jr., Mendota) tied for 33rd after shooting a three-round score of 227 (78-76-73) at the 12-team Gordin Division III Classic Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

The University of St. Francis’ Lane Barbier (Fr., Ottawa) tied for sixth with a score of 75 at the Trinity Christian College Troll Classic on Oct. 3. He also shot an 85 at the Olivet Nazarene Fall Invitational on Sept. 26.

Judson University’s Jordan Twidell (Sr., BV) finished 44th with an 87 at the Trinity Christian College Troll Classic, and shot an 88 at the Olivet Nazarene Fall Invitational. He placed 51st (90) at the Elmhurst Fall Invitational on Sept. 25.

Illinois Central College’s Bobby McBride (Fr., Henry) tied for 46th with a two-round score of 164 (79-85) Saturday and Sunday at the University of Illinois-Springfield Dan Salisbury Memorial Invitational.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Katie Gregorich (Jr., St. Bede) finished 33rd with a two-round score of 184 (90-94) at the Mad Dawg Invite Sept. 28-29. She also tied for 41st with a three-round score of 294 (93-94-107) Friday through Sunday at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship.

Ashford University’s Alizabeth Fiorini (So., Princeton) finished 32nd with a two-round score of 209 (105-104) at the Ashford Invitational Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

Monmouth College’s Lauren Kellen (Jr., Mendota) scored the lone goal in overtime to give Monmouth a 1-0 win over Illinois College on Oct. 3 and had an assist Saturday in a 4-0 win over Cornell College. She also had a goal in a 3-1 loss to the University of Dubuque on Sept. 25 and an assist in a 2-1 overtime win against Lawrence University on Sept. 28. Kellen leads the team with 14 goals and also has three assists this season.

Monmouth teammate Lauren Becker (Sr., Mendota) has played in all 11 games and has one assist.

The Fighting Scots (8-3) earned their first-ever regional ranking Monday by the National Soccer Coaches of America Association, debuting at No. 10 in the North Region.

Illinois Central College’s Bryce Pharmer (Fr., Princeton) has a goal and an assist this season. Teammate Lexi Marselle (Fr., Princeton) has started every game on defense

Eureka College’s Matt Stevenson (Sr., Fieldcrest) scored his first career touchdown on a 51-yard interception return in a 21-13 win over Minnesota Morris on Sept. 28. It was his second career interception. He also had a tackle for a loss and half a sack.

Jake Bane (Sr., Fieldcrest) had two catches for 20 yards, while Alex Anderson (Sr., Henry) started at center. Nate Louis (Sr., Fieldcrest) also started at wide receiver.

On Saturday, Eureka earned a 42-28 win over Westminster as Stevenson finished with one solo and six assisted tackle. Bane had three catches for 70 yards. Louis and Stevenson both started, while teammate Austin Stearns (Fr., Fieldcrest) participated in the win.

Monmouth College’s Brik Wedekind (Sr., Princeton) went 12-for-27 passing for 182 yards and a 24-yard touchdown pass in a 23-20 loss to Cornell College on Sept. 28. He also averaged 42.5 yards per punt on four punts. Teammate Austin Peterson (Sr., BV) had six catches for 78 yards, while Ryan Hix (Sr., BV) had four solo tackles, an assisted tackle and one pass breakup.

Wedekind was 14-for-28 for 114 yards, two touchdowns and one interception Saturday in a 22-14 loss to St. Norbert College. He also averaged 40.3 yards on seven punts. Peterson caught both touchdowns and finished with five catches for 29 yards. Hix registered three solo tackles and one assisted.

The University of Wisconsin’s Ethan Armstrong (RS Sr., Ottawa) had two solo tackles and one assisted tackle in a 31-24 loss to No. 4 Ohio State Sept. 28.

Northwestern University’s C.J. Robbins (So., L-P) participated in the Wildcats’ 40-30 loss to No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday.

Wartburg College’s Grant Zimmerman (So., Mendota) averaged 36.2 yards per punt on four punts in a 34-24 win over Simpson College on Saturday.

St. Ambrose University’s Zack Cinotto (Fr., L-P) was 1-for-1 passing for 12 yards in a 66-0 win over Concordia (Mich.) on Sept. 28.

Illinois Wesleyan University’s Zach Anderson (Sr., Fieldcrest) started at right tackle in a 14-7 win over Hope College on Sept. 28.

Knox College’s Jack Donahue (Fr., Marquette) started at right guard in a 37-29 loss to Ripon College on Saturday and in a 14-7 loss to Lake Forest on Sept. 28.

Rockford College’s Jacob Robison (Sr., Princeton) started at left guard in a 34-7 loss to Olivet Nazarene on Saturday.

North Central College’s Michael Weidner (Sr., BV) played in a 27-7 win Sept. 28 over UW-Stevens Point.

Illinois College’s Anthony Cook (So., Fieldcrest) participated in a 44-28 win over Ripon College on Sept. 28.

Cross Country
Mount Mercy University’s T.J. Mosbach (Sr., Hall) placed 30th overall and sixth among non-Division I runners (26:22.83) Saturday at the Kansas Rim Rock Collegiate Classic. In the women’s race, Mount Mercy’s Liz Mosbach (So., Hall) placed 67th overall and 15th among non-Division I runners (24:25.73), while teammate Katie Hoffert (Fr., Hall) was 87th overall and 30th among non-Division I runners (25:44.61).

Illinois State University’s Scott Janusick (RS So., Hall) placed seventh overall (28:10.2) Friday at the Titan Invite. In the women’s race, ISU’s Kimi Sanden (So., BV) placed 15th overall (20:33.0).

Judson University’s Justine McDowell (Sr., Mendota) placed 37th (25:40.3) at the Wisconsin Lutheran Warrior Invitational on Saturday. Teammate Cassie Criminger (Sr., BV) was 87th (27:25.7), while Augustana College’s Lorraine Stamberger (Jr., LaMoille) was 138th (28:56.7) as Augustana took the team title. Dominican University’s Jacquie Wallaert (Fr., Hall) was 148th (29:10.6).

Campbell University’s Evan Darm (Jr., Marquette) placed 104th (26:06.40) at the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 5

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Anthony Urbanski (Jr., Hall) placed 104th (28:33.6) at the University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 28. Lewis University’s James Weissensel (So., Marquette) was 222nd (27:23.4).
Urbanski also placed 169th (27:40.88) Friday at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational.

Aurora University’s Brianna Downey (So., Putnam County) finished 359th (30:34.1) at the Augustana Brissman/Lundeen Invite on Sept. 27.

Northern Michigan University’s Kalli Herron (Sr., L-P) had 15 kills in a win over Michigan Tech on Oct. 1 and 14 kills Friday in a win over Wayne State. She is second on the team with 183 kills and also has 54 digs, 26 blocks and 22 aces.

Sauk Valley Community College’s Kalli Scheppers (So., Mendota) had 23 kills in a win over Black Hawk East on Sept. 25. She has a team-high 290 kills to go along with 137 digs, 17 blocks,four aces and three assists this season.

Teammate Brianna Correa (Fr., Mendota) had 17 digs in a win over IVCC on Oct. 2 and 17 digs in a loss to Waubonsee on Saturday. She is second on the team with 269 digs.

Western Illinois University’s Heather Smith (Sr., L-P) has 118 kills, 27 digs, 22 blocks and three assists.

North Central College’s Amanda Walker (So., Ottawa) leads the team with 48 blocks and is second on the team with 131 kills. Teammate Stephanie Ganz (Fr., Mendota) has two digs.

Elmhurst College’s Jessica Suarez (Fr., L-P) has 66 kills, 19 digs, 13 blocks and three assists. Elmhurst is 20-2 overall and ranked sixth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

Roosevelt University’s Emily Bodmer (Sr., Mendota/IVCC) has 111 digs, eight assists and six aces.

Gustavus Adolphus College’s Kelle Nett (So., Hall) has a team-high 29 aces, is third on the team with 167 kills, second on the team with 48 blocks and has 39 digs.

Beloit College’s Bethany Stavrakas (So., St. Bede) is second on the team with 128 digs and also has 62 kills, 14 blocks, 11 assists and eight aces.

Augustana College’s Hailee Brayton (Jr., St. Bede/IVCC) leads the team with 30 blocks, is third on the team with 98 kills and also has 25 digs and three aces.

MacMurray College’s Brianna Pohl (Sr., Mendota/IVCC) has 74 kills, 42 digs, 15 blocks and four assists this season.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Sammi Herron (So., L-P) has 18 kills, four blocks and two digs this season.

Lincoln College’s Taylor Hewitt (So., BV) had 16 digs and two points in a win over Lewis and Clark Community College on Oct. 2 and added 28 digs and 15 points as Lincoln won its two matches at its own triangular Saturday.

Judson University’s Hollie Reppin (Fr., Mendota) has 26 digs, seven assists, six aces and a kill.

Webster University’s Amy Stanke (So., St. Bede) has two digs in two sets.

Aurora University’s Christy Savellano (Jr., L-P) won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and also earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles as Aurora defeated Concordia University Chicago 9-0 on Sept. 24 to conclude the fall season. She was 7-5 in singles play (6-5 at No. 1 singles and 1-0 at No. 2 singles) and 7-5 at No. 1 doubles during the fall.

Illinois Wesleyan University’s Aaron Guenther (Sr., Ottawa) went 0-1 in singles play and 1-2 in doubles action at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional Sept. 27-30.
