PC, Fieldcrest softball advance to state

Area junior high softball teams are state bound.

Both the Putnam County and Fieldcrest softball teams won their sectionals Saturday to adavance to their respective IESA state tournaments, which will begin Friday at Champions Field in Normal.

The Lady Pumas downed Seneca 3-2 in Granville to advance to the Class A state tournament.

In the game, Paige Veronda went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and an RBI, while Olivia Holmes was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

In the circle, C.C. Davis allowed two runs — one earned — while striking out five in a complete-game effort.

PC (21-2) will play Bourbonnais Maternity BVM  (17-3) at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the state quarterfinal. The semifinals and championship are scheduled for Saturday.

It’s the fifth time in the last six years the Lady Pumas have qualified for state.

Fieldcrest rolled to the Class AA state tournament Saturday as it beat Minooka 6-2 in Wenona.

The squad will play at 2 p.m. Friday against the winner of today’s Sectional G title game between Edwardsville Lincoln at Pleasant Plains  at 2 p.m.
