Roundup: Mendota football falls to Stillman Valley

NT Sports Staff

The Mendota football team couldn’t keep pace on Friday.

Playing their first road game this season, the Trojans fell behind early and couldn’t keep up as they fell to state-ranked Stillman Valley 44-23 in the Big Northern Conference West Division game at Stillman Valley.

“It just kind of snowballed for us,” MHS coach Brock Sondgeroth said. “They are
just a good team.”

Cardinals fullback Zac Hare ran for 181 yards and four touchdowns.

“They pretty much handled us with their fullback,” Sondgeroth said. “He had a great night running against us and we couldn’t get him stopped. He’s a really patient runner and we couldn’t get him stopped. He was just hard to bring down.”

For Mendota, Wyatt Martinson, James Carroll and Trevor Todd all scored rushing touchdowns, while fullback Jimmy Bruno left the game midway through the second quarter with a sprained ankle.

Martinson finished with a team-high 77 yards for the Trojans, while quarterback James Buchanan was 5-for-7 for 58 yards passing.

Orion 33, Hall 7
The Red Devils took a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter on a three-yard scramble from quarterback Taggart Venegas and extra-point kick from Matt Krolak, but after that it was all Orion Friday in Three Rivers Conference South Divison action at Orion.

Clippers running back Jason Bontz rushed for a pair of touchdowns and Liam Ohlendorf ran for one score and also hooked up with Damon Quest on another 20-yard passing touchdown as Amboy-LaMoille doubled-up the Rams (0-4, 0-4) in TRC North action Friday at Port Byron.

Chris Jones and Jason Benhoff also found the endzone for A-L (1-3, 1-0) with second half touchdown runs.

Fieldcrest 26, El Paso-Gridley 22
Grant Jochums ran for 241 yards on 33 carries with a pair of touchdowns as the Knights edged past rival EPG in Heart of Illinois Conference action in Minonk.

Kewanee 33, Bureau Valley 19
The Storm (1-3, 0-1 TRC North) pulled within eight early in the fourth quarter on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Parker Neuhalfen to Josh Mead, but couldn’t complete the comeback bid against the Boilermakers in the Three Rivers Conference crossover contest in Kewanee (3-1, 1-0 TRC South).

Neuhalfen threw for 189 yards on 8-of-20 passing and also two more touchdown passes — a 44-yard strike to Jake Smith and a 36-yard connection to Tommy Johnston.

Marquette 28, Chicago Hope 0
The Crusaders (4-0, 4-0) earned head coach Tom Jobst his 100th career win as they rolled to the Northeastern Athletic Conference victory over the Eagles (2-2, 2-2) Friday in Chicago.

DeKalb 56, Ottawa 28
