Editor’s note: This is the final update of the season from Ottawa graduate and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim prospect Michael Hermosillo.
It’s crazy to think that three months ago I was writing my first journal on my new journey of being a professional baseball player.
It really went by all too fast. But the saying, ‘Time flies when you’re having fun,’ definitely holds true in this particular stage of my life and what I’m doing. I couldn’t ask for a better job at the age of 18. It’s something that I’m very grateful for because I know everyone doesn’t have the opportunity to do this.
I’m on my way home now (on Sept. 2) — writing on the airplane — making a short trip home before I’m back in Tempe in 2 ½ weeks for Instructional League.
Instructional League (“Instrux”) is an offseason league typically comprised of short-season, rookie-level and recently-drafted players. The goal of the league is to refine the skills of young players under the close instruction of minor league coaches and coordinators. It’s almost like Spring Training, just in the fall.
Instructional League is something you are invited to and only 45 players get to go, so its an opportunity for me to take advantage of playing more games and improving in every skill set.
The best part about these last couple weeks was that I was finally active for good after nagging hamstring issues throughout the year.
I was able to get some at bats and leave with a good average going into Instructional League because confidence is definitely the key to this game, and right now I feel really good at the plate for the amount of at-bats I’ve had and the pitching I’ve faced.
It’s still going to take some time getting used to seeing 90 mph every day and that just comes with repetition.
I’m ready to come home to get myself ready health wise for Instrux. I can’t wait to see my family and catch up with my friends.
I’m definitely going to have to catch a couple Ottawa Pirate football games while I’m home. I was able to watch the first game on iHigh and it brought back so many memories.
I’m also going to have to go to Bianchis — my favorite pizza in Ottawa.
It’s been really cool sharing my experiences and I thank the NewsTribune for coming up with the idea.
Hopefully, I can give some type of update during Instrux. Go Angels!
