Hermosillo: Studying baseball during off time

Editor’s Note: This is part of a summer series that will run every other Saturday in which Ottawa graduate Michael Hermosillo will give a first-person account of his journey in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization.

My main goal when I arrived in Tempe was to gain a better understanding of the game every day from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Baseball IQ is an important part of playing the game.

In baseball, every play is critical. It’s not like basketball where you get chance after chance to make up for mistakes. The reason I say this is because while being hurt and rehabbing I have learned so much more about the game just by listening to the coaches and players around me. I’m getting a feel of what they would have done or what their thought process would have been on a given situation.

I’m always asking my manager, Denny Hocking, questions. For example, I’ll ask questions like what’s your approach at the plate with a guy throwing a lot of off speed stuff? Do you still think fastball and adjust to the slider/changeup? I ask all these questions so I can apply them in the game once I start playing again and don’t have to second guess myself on what I should do if I’m put in the situation.

You always have to find ways to get better. I’m limited to my in-game experience until I’m back on the field, but at the same time I can put myself in any given situation and learn that way. I honestly can not wait until I’m back on the field.

On a side note, I got a pleasant surprise the other day when we were playing the Royals in Surprise, AZ. We had just arrived to the field and I was sitting outside of the dugout listening to music when I looked to my left and saw Coach (Gordy) Kirkman (Ottawa High School football’s offensive coordinator) and his wife standing there with a big smile on their faces. They were visiting in Surprise and saw that we were playing where they were at and decided to stop by to say hello. It was awesome to get to sit down and talk with them for a little while before the game got started.

Definitely one of the better experiences so far just because it was such a surprise and great to be able to see familiar faces, especially a coach that I respected so much and loved playing for.

Last but not least, I’d like to congratulate Coach Tom Hart on being named new varsity head baseball coach for the Ottawa Pirates. I’m very happy for you coach! Coach Heaberlin made great strides with the baseball program in the last four years and I have no doubt that Coach Hart will continue to keep moving the program forward in the right direction. I just don’t know who’s more excited, Coach Hart or Huston Hart (his son). LOL! Good luck coach!
