Below is the 2013 NewsTribune All-Area Softball Teams.

FIRST TEAM
Tara Kunkel, St. Bede

Year: Junior
Position: Outfielder
Season highlights: Kunkel connected on a .424 batting average this spring, to finish second best in the Lady Bruins’ lineup. The senior left fielder added 17 runs scored and eight RBIs as well this season as she helped lead St. Bede to a 24-7 record and first ever trip to the IHSA State series.

Annie Miller, Putnam County
Year:
Sophomore
Position: Outfielder
Season highlights: The Illinois Coaches Association Class 1A All-State third-team pick finished in the area top 10 in three categories with 25 RBIs, 10 stolen bases and nine doubles. A second team All-Tri-County Conference pick, Miller hit .371 this spring for sectional champion PC.

Taylor Tjaden, Fieldcrest
Year: Junior
Position: Outfielder
Season highlights: Tjaden was one of the area’s elite offensive performers as she finished third among NT area players with a .493 batting average. The All-Heart of Illinois Conference first-team pick also scored 25 runs and put up strong power numbers with six doubles and two triples.

Jaclyn Kalkwarf, Fieldcrest
Year: Freshman
Position: Infielder
Season highlights: Kalkwarf had a strong rookie campaign as she finished in the top 10 of four area offensive categories. The Heart of Illinois All-Conference Honorable Mention pick hit for a .472 batting average and also tallied 25 RBIs, 24 runs scored and six doubles this spring.

Monica Monroe, Putnam County
Year: Junior
Position: Infielder
Season highlights: The Lady Panthers slugger led the team with 27 RBIs while hitting .396 with a team-high 10 doubles and two home runs. Monroe was a second-team Illinois Coaches Association Class 1A All-State selection and also earned second All-Tri County Conference Honors as well.

Madison Tjaden, Fieldcrest
Year:
Sophomore
Position: Infielder
Season highlights: The area’s leading run producer this spring with 30 RBIs, Tjaden hit .406 for the Lady Knights. A second-team Heart of Illinois All-Conference pick, Tjaden added three home runs, six doubles and three triples to her impressive batting numbers with 19 runs scored.

Abby Turczyn, La Salle-Peru
Year: Junior
Position: Infielder
Season highlights: Turczyn led the way for the L-P offense with a team-best .444 batting average. The unanimous All-Northern Illinois Big 12 West Division pick also led L-P with 11 stolen bases and 10 doubles and added 15 RBIs and a pair of triples for the regional champion Lady Cavs.

Lainie Schweickert, St. Bede
Year:
Senior
Position: Pitcher
Season highlights: The 2013 NT Player of the Year was a dominant force in the circle, leading the area with a blistering 0.67 ERA while burning past batters with an area-best 266 strikeouts over 157 2/3 innings of work. An ICA All-State pick, Schweickert also hit .337 with 25 RBIs.

Shelby Yepsen, Putnam County
Year:
Junior
Position: Pitcher
Season highlights: The Lady Panther ace compiled a 17-4 record this spring with 203 strikeouts — both second best in the area — while posting an ERA of 1.29. An ICA Class 1A All-State pick and All-Tri-County Conference selection, Yepsen helped lead the Lady Panthers to a sectional title.

Lydia Stariha, St. Bede
Year:
Senior
Position: Catcher
Season highlights: The Lady Bruins catcher was a rock on defense and a force at the top of the lineup where she led the team with her marks of a .455 batting average, three triples and 17 stolen bases, and tied for the team lead with 25 RBIs. She was a third-team ICA Class 2A All-State pick.

Ashlyn Kennedy, Mendota
Year:
Senior
Position: Utility
Season highlights: A dual threat, the unanimous All-Big Northern West Division pick posted a 10-8 record with an ERA of 2.10 and 119 strikeouts, which were all top 10 in the area. Offensively, Kennedy finished in the area top 10 with her .452 batting average, 22 RBIs and nine doubles.

SECOND TEAM
Brooke Carroll, Mendota
Year:
Sophomore
Position: Outfielder
Season highlights: Carroll was a strong No. 2 hitter as she finished with a .351 batting average — second best on the team. Once on base, the All-Big Northern Conference West Division pick showed her speed with an area-best 20 stolen bases and 28 runs scored — the second most in the area.

Deidra Whightsil, Hall
Year:
Junior
Position: Outfielder
Season highlights: Whightsil connected on nearly half of her at bats this spring as she finished with a .476 batting average. A first-team All-Tri County Conference pick, Whightsil led the Lady Red Devils with 13 runs scored and six doubles and also drove in 10 runs this spring.

Alexis White, Fieldcrest
Year:
Freshman
Position: Outfielder
Season highlights: White had opposing pitchers seeing red this spring as she hit .338 with 15 RBIs and 16 runs scored. The FHS freshman also provided plenty of power in her rookie campaign for the Lady Knights with 2 home runs, three triples and a pair of doubles.

Lindsey Greene, Ottawa
Year: Senior
Position: Infielder
Season highlights: The Lady Pirate leadoff hitter set the table with a .467 average and led the team with 18 extra base hits, which included an area-best 12 doubles as well as four triples and two home runs. Green was a unanimous All-Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division pick.

Heidi James, Princeton
Year: Senior
Position: Infielder
Season highlights: The senior shortstop posted a team-best .424 batting average this spring in the leadoff position. James also added a team-high 18 runs scored to go with five doubles and nine RBIs this spring for the Tigresses, who finished the year 10-9.

Taylor Pettit, Putnam County
Year: Junior
Position: Infielder
Season highlights: A third-team ICA All-State pick, Pettit posted plenty of positive hitting numbers this spring, including an area-best five triples. The All-Tri County Conference First-Team pick also had 18 RBIs and four doubles while hitting .392 for the sectional champion Lady Panthers.

Barbi Prokup, St. Bede
Year: Senior
Position: Infielder
Season highlights: The Academy senior second baseman was steady in the field all spring, committing just one error this season. On offense, Prokup hit .303 with 22 RBIs, three doubles and a pair of triples, and she swiped 11 bases as she helped the Lady Bruins to a fourth-place finish in Class 2A.

Brittany Zawacki, La Salle-Peru
Year: Senior
Position: Pitcher
Season highlights: Zawacki hurled a team-best 81 strikeouts this spring and compiled a 1.70 ERA for the regional champion Lady Cavaliers. Zawacki, a unanimous All-Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division pick, finished with a 10-3 record. She also contributed 11 RBIs.

Brianna Zeman, La Salle-Peru
Year: Senior
Position: Pitcher
Season highlights: Zeman led the L-P pitching corps with a 1.22 ERA, which was second best in the area this spring. A unanimous All-Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division pick, Zeman registered 69 strikeouts and had 11 RBIs offensively as she helped L-P to a sectional final berth.

Emily Grace, Earlville-Leland
Year: Senior
Position: Catcher
Season highlights: Grace was a blessing for Earlville-Leland this spring as she hit .408 and led the team with 19 RBIs and four triples — tied for second best in the area. A unanimous All-Little Ten Conference selection for the second straight season, Grace also tallied 23 runs.

Abby Jaques, Princeton
Year:
Sophomore
Position: Catcher
Season highlights: The strong-armed catcher kept opposing base runners off-balance with her quick, accurate throws down to the bases. Meanwhile, at the plate, Jaques hit .400 and tied for the area lead with four home runs to go with a team-high 21 RBIs, five doubles and two triples.
