St. Bede senior Barbi Prokup knew a long time ago she wanted to attend school at St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Ind.
“When I was younger I used to go to golf camps at St. Mary’s, so I decided to go to school there in about seventh grade,” Prokup said. “I really enjoyed it, it’s a beautiful campus and it has good academics.”
As an added bonus, Prokup was given the opportunity to play golf and/or softball at the NCAA Division III school.
After experiencing St. Bede’s run to the state tournament and taking a couple weeks to think about the decision, Prokup chose to play softball in college.
“In the last two or three weeks I decided that softball would be a better fit for me,” she said. “I just think I put too much stress on myself when I play golf since it’s more of an individual sport. I like being part of a team, so that’s where softball comes into play. I like working together with people. In the end, I think it will be better for me to meet new people and get involved at St. Mary’s.”
Prokup played second base for the Lady Bruins. Last season she hit .303 with three doubles and two triples while driving in 22 runs and scoring 16 runs.
Prokup, who only made one error all season, was a NewsTribune Second-Team All-Area selection.
“Barbi loves the game of softball,” said Bill Prokup, her father and St. Bede’s coach. “Defensively, I think she can play with anybody. She can play multiple positions. I think she can make a good contribution at that level. She’s really improved on her hitting. She’ll make contact. She can bunt well. I think they are getting a pretty decent softball player.”
