2013 All-Area Girls Soccer Team

The 2013 NewsTribune All-Area Girls Soccer team showcased a broad range of talent on the pitch this spring. Here's a look at the players who stood out this season:

Sydney Beyer, Ottawa
Year: Senior
Position: Defender
Season highlights: Beyer was one of the linchpins of the Lady Pirate defense, helping the squad to its first ever winning season with three saves and also had three assists. She will continue her career at Lincoln College.

Marissa Bonnell, Mendota
Year: Senior
Position: Forward
Season highlights: The Lady Trojans’ leading scorer wrapped up her senior spring with eight goals for MHS. She was honored with a unanimous All-Big Northern Conference West Division selection.

Natalie Conrad, Ottawa
Year: Senior
Position: Defender
Season highlights:
The University of St. Francis soccer recruit had a big hand in the Lady Pirate’s defensive success this spring with five saves. The NIB 12 Honorable Mention pick also had two goals and an assist on offense.

Briggitte Flowers, Ottawa
Year: Senior
Position: Forward
Season highlights: The NT Girls Soccer Player of the Year led the area with 23 goals and added nine assists. She finishes as OTHS’ leading scorer with 63 career goals and will continue on at Concordia University.

Sarah Hupfauer, Mendota
Year: Freshman
Position: Midfielder
Season highlights:  Hupfauer was a big part of the Lady Trojan offense with six goals scored. She earned an All-Big Northern Conference Honorable Mention pick for her play

Michelle Kelly, Princeton
Year: Junior
Position: Forward
Season highlights: The Tigresses depended on a bulk of their offense coming through Kelly, who scored 20 of the team’s 25 goals. Kelly, who connected on 20-of-58 shot attempts, also had one assist.

Lexi Marselle, Princeton
Year: Senior
Position: Defender
Season highlights: The Tigresses captain was a strong defender equally adept at patrolling the defense or midfield. She also showed offensive talent with two goals on six shots and two assists.

Emma O'Dell, Ottawa
Year: Junior
Position: Forward
Season highlights: O’Dell finished second on the Lady Pirates with 13 goals this spring. The junior striker also was a strong facilitator as she dished out eight assists to her OTHS teammates.

Kelly Schmidt, Princeton
Year: Junior
Position: Goalkeeper
Season highlights: The junior team captain helped lead the PHS defense to seven shutouts on the season. Schmidt turned back 86 of the 113 shots sent her way this spring in net.

Sophie Snyder, Ottawa
Year: Freshman
Position: Midfielder
Season highlights: The Lady Pirates first-year midfielder was a strong presence on offense with 10 goals and an area-best 13 assists. She also added four saves on defense.


Rebecca Turpen, Princeton
Year: Senior
Position: Defender
Season highlights: A crucial component in a Tigresses defense that registered seven shutouts, Turpen also took a few turns on the offensive end as she registered three shots this spring for PHS.
