OREGON — St. Bede senior Lanie Schweickert was dominant in the pitching circle again Saturday.
She kept the Lady Bruins in the Class 2A Oregon Sectional final long enough for St. Bede to squeak out a run to win 1-0 in 10 innings.
“Lanie was amazing again today,” said St. Bede coach Bill Prokup of his ace, who struck out 20 batters. “Defense was solid and we finally caught a break there in the 10th and finally got a run.”
With one out in the top of the 10th, St. Bede’s Tara Kunkel put down her fourth bunt single of the game. She was able to race to third on a throwing error at first.
That brought up Abbey Nowakowski, who hit an RBI single to left to score Kunkel.
Schweickert and the defense made the slim lead hold up in the bottom of the 10th as the senior ace ended the game with her 20th strikeout.
Kunkel finished 4-for-4, while Nowakowski and Lydia Stariha each had two hits.
The Lady Bruins advance to the Class 2A Northern Illinois University Super-Sectional at 1 p.m. Monday in DeKalb.
St. Bede will face Aurora Central Catholic, which beat Chicago Gordon Tech 10-3 in the Lisle Sectional final.
The win gave the Lady Bruins the program’s second sectional championship. The first game in 2006.
