Prep of the Week: Fieldcrest's Maria Baldwin

NT Sports Staff

Name: Maria Baldwin

School: Fieldcrest

Year: Junior

Sport: Track and Field

Nicknames: (Teammate) Tessa (Holland) calls me Motha Rush because we always tell each other we are going to do it for Mother Russia. (People also call me) Mariah or Mia. Mia is just easy to say and people have always called me Mariah. I don’t really know where that came from.

Superstitions: Every time I get out of the bus to enter a meet, I listen to ‘Rockstar 101’ by Rhianna.

If you could spend a day with any famous athlete, who would it be and why?: Clay Matthews because he’s really good looking and he’s my idol. He’s really strong and he’s a beast.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?: I would go to Santorini, Greece. Greece in general is beautiful.

With what food could you win an eating contest?: Hot wings. I once ate 35 in one sitting at Buffalo Wild Wings and they wouldn’t give me anymore.

What is the most played song on your iPod recently?: ‘I Love It’ by Icona Pop. I really love that song.

What guilty-pleasure TV shows do you watch?: I watch Vikings on the history channel and Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life.

Last week’s accomplishments: Baldwin earned two state medals at the IHSA Class 1A State Track and Field Meet. She ran a school-record time of 11:27.19 to place fifth in the 3,200-meter run and also finished eighth in the 1,600.

Baldwin on her performance: I was really happy with how fast I ran. I felt really strong and felt I ran my races really smart and tactical. When it came down to the final lap, I gave every ounce of energy I had and left everything on the track.

Coach Carol Bauer says: It was absolutely amazing. Maria works very hard in the offseason as all good distance runners have to. She’s so tenacious and willing to absorb pain. I think that’s a big part of her success. It was just nice to see someone have that success who works hard.
