Prep soccer: Ottawa loses in regional semifinal

Brad Martin
NewsTribune Sports Writer

MORRIS — Five days ago, the Yorkville girls soccer team hammered Ottawa by seven goals.

The Lady Pirates showed Tuesday they learned a lot from that loss, but in the end it wasn’t enough as the Lady Foxes beat Ottawa 2-1 in a Class 2A Morris Regional semifinal.

Despite the loss, the Lady Pirates finish their third varsity season with the program’s first winning record at 9-8-1.

“It’s really a testament to how hard these girls have worked,” Ottawa coach Holly Hall said. “Some of these girls started out playing with the boys and to come this far in such a short time is really an achievement.”

Early on, keeper Emily Peterson and the Ottawa defense kept the game scoreless.
Brittany Straznickas seemed to be a thorn in the side of the Lady Pirates as she seemed to be in on every play whether it be chasing loose balls, causing turnovers or pushing the ball up the field.

With 4:47 left in the first half, Straznickas sent a header toward the net and Peterson appeared at first to have the stop, but the ball went off her finger tips and into the goal to give the Lady Foxes a 1-0 lead.

Ottawa responded right away when Emma O’Dell made a nice move and then passed over to Briggitte Flowers for an easy goal that tied the game just 34 seconds later.

The teams went back and forth the rest of the half and well into the second half with defense leading the way for both.

Then with 27:42 remaining, Alyssa Heimbach charged toward the net and fired at Peterson, who seemed to slip on the play, then look back to see the ball in the net to give the Lady Foxes a 2-1 lead.

Despite several good looks, the Lady Pirates could not find the back of the net and Yorkville came away with the 2-1 victory to move on to Friday’s championship game against Morris.
