The latest chapter in a long storied rivalry was anything but pretty between the LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa, but no one said it had to be as the Lady Pirates won a wild one over the Lady Cavaliers 11-8 in 10 innings Friday night at Veterans Park in Peru in NIB 12 West Conference action.

In fact the term “Winnin’ Ugly” would fit the Lady Pirates just fine as eight of their 11 runs were unearned thanks in large part to five Lady Cavalier errors.

L-P was leading 5-2 entering the top of the seventh inning when the bottom started to fall out. Lady Pirates Kelsey Greene and Jill Wignes singled to get things started. That brought up Mary Richardson, who sent a pop fly to right field but the ball was dropped and Greene scored. Then on the ensuing throw to third, the ball was off line, allowing Amanda Oley to tie the game at five.

Taylor Marvin made her varsity start in the circle and was solid throughout the night for the Lady Pirates. She and the Ottawa defense kept the scored tied at five until the top of the ninth inning.

Maddie Bentz led off the inning for OTHS with an infield single and Jill Wignes followed with a walk.

Mary Richardson then sent a swinging bunt to Brittany Zawacki but the ball was dropped, which allowed Greene to give the Lady Pirates a 6-5 lead.

Taylor Jansen then smacked a two-run double to right field to extend their lead to 8-5.
The Lady Cavaliers responded with their bats in the bottom half of the inning.

With the bases loaded, Whitney Lippert scored on a wild pitch, and then Zawacki tied the game once again on a two-run single up the middle that sent things into the 10th inning.
“I’m proud of the way the kids kept responding to the challenges tonight,” Lady Cavaliers head coach Mike Schmidt said. “They could’ve hung their heads and been done, but they battled back and found a way to keep things going tonight.”

The Lady Pirates got some two out magic going in the top of the 10th. Greene singled and the then stole second base. Then, back-to-back errors gave Ottawa a 10-8 lead.

Richardson then made it 11-8 with a deep double over the centerfielder’s head. That was all the offense OTHS would need as they held on through the home half of the inning to claim the conference win.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way the girls played tonight,” said Ottawa head coach Jeff Davis. “They could’ve hung their head an said it’s over, but they didn’t and ended up getting the win against a very good team.”

Greene and Taylor Jansen each had four hits for Ottawa, while Chrissy Pond and Jansen each had three RBIs.

For the Lady Cavaliers, Abby Turczyn had four hits while Zawacki had three RBIs.
