It was a big day for the Aurit family Friday at the Class 1A Seneca Girls Track and Field Sectional.
Marquette junior Dani Aurit won a sectional title and state berth in the 3,200 meter with a time of 12:11.56 and pulled off a distance double dip with a second-place state-qualifying finish in the 1,600 (5:28.9). Her younger sister freshman Paige Aurit also punched her ticket to the state meet with a victory in the 800 at 2:24.7.
The Lady Crusaders finished fifth in the team standings with 45 team points. Host Seneca won with 167.
Fieldcrest senior Maria Baldwin earned a return trip to the state meet in two events with a second-place finish in the 3,200 in a time of 11:30.71 and a fourth-place qualifying time finish in the mile (5:28) Friday at the Class 1A Lewiston Sectional.
Lady Knights sophomore Tessa Holland will be joining her in Charleston for state after qualifying with a second-place finish in the 400 (59.36), as will FHS freshman Abbie Fuller, who finished second in the 200 (27.83).
BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
The La Salle-Peru boys track and field team finished sixth in the team standings at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet Friday in Dixon.
Carlos Covvarubias finished second in the high jump for the Cavaliers with a height of 6-3. Clay Vaini added a silver medal finish in the long jump with a leap of 20-5 ½.
Also for L-P, Brett Kowalczyk was sixth in the shot put, and the 1,600 relay squad finished sixth.
Princeton’s Zach Andersen and Drew Pranka as well as St. Bede’s Steven Gualandri all won a pair of NCIC Conference titles in the 84th and final running of the NCIC Conference Meet Friday in Princeton.
Gualandri claimed victory in the 300 hurdles (40.86) and triple jump (40-feet).
Anderson scored a pair of distance wins with first-place finishes in the 1,600 (5:06) and 3,200 (10:43), while Pranka scored firsts in the pole vault (10-6) and 110 hurdles (17.16).
Also for Princeton, Caleb Strom won the 200 (23.66), Jordan Sissel won the shot put (43-11/2) and Austen Stewart took first in the high jump with a leap of 6-4.
At Bureau Valley
Logan Hoffert led the host Storm with a conference championship in the 300 hurdles (41.31) and also teamed up with Tucker Schoff, Ryan Taylor and Daniel Trone to give the Bureau Valley 1,600 relay a conference title Friday in Manlius at the Three Rivers Athletic Conference meet.
The Storm were second in the team standings with 88 team points, while Erie-Prophetstown won with 186 points.
La Salle-Peru 6, Washington 5
The La Salle-Peru boys baseball team topped Washington Friday on the road in Washington.
L-P’s Austin Smith moved to 5-1 on the season with the win on the mound. He helped his cause at the plate as he hit 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Also for the Cavaliers, Kyle Jenins was 3-for-4 with a double and Bret Storm went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Next up for the Cavs will be a contest against Yorkville 4 p.m. today at Geneva’s Fifth Third Ballpark, home of the Kane County Cougars.
The Crusaders cruised to a non-conference win Friday in Gardner.
Ellito Kowalski picked up the win on the hill, throwing six innings of shutout ball with only two hits allowed and eight strikeouts.
Curtiss Johnson and Kowalski both had 2 RBI for Marquette (21-7) which jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first
Stillman Valley 6-4, Mendota 2-1
The Cardinals picked up a pair of wins over the Trojans Friday in a Big Northern Confernce doubleheader at Faber Field in Mendota.
St. Bede 4, Rockridge 1
The Lady Bruins rolled past the Rockets Friday at Benedictine Field in Lisle.
Lady Bruin ace Lainie Schweickert gave up 1 unearned run in the first but settled in to throw a no hitter, with 11 strikeouts against four walks.
She also helped her cause offensively as she hit 2-for-3 with a home run and and two RBI.
Tara Kunkel was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Lydia Stariha had a triple and Barbi Prokup registered an RBI for SBA.
Putnam County 11, Marquette 1
The Lady Panthers pounded out 16 hits to roll past the Lady Crusaders and the claim the Tri-County Conference title with the league win in Granville.
Shelby Yepsen advanced to 13-3 on the season with the win pitching for PC (17-6, 7-0). She had 10 strikeouts in the victory.
Monica Monroe was 3-for-5 at the plate for PC with three RBI, and Taylor Pettit was 2-for-3 with three RBI as well.
Ottawa 1, Streator 1 (tie)
The Lady Pirates played the Lady Bulldogs to a draw Friday night in NIB 12 West action in Streator.
Brigitte Flowers notched the lone goal for OTHS (9-7-1, 2-5-1 NIB 12). Emily Peterson had 18 saves.
