Community Sports Notes: Ride to Remember in honor of Heitmann

The first Ride to Remember Poker Run is scheduled for Saturday, May 18.

The poker run is in honor of local marine helicopter pilot Capt. Thomas J. Heitmann, who was killed Sept. 19, 2011 during a training mission.

The cost is $20 per person for the run and $10 for dinner only.

The poker run will begin at the Illinois Valley Marine Corps League, located on 351 in Oglesby and end at the Mendota Moose Lodge on 34 in Mendota.

Breakfast and registration begins at 8 a.m. There will be a color guard and bike blessing around 10 a.m. with the first group leaving shortly after.

The ride is a 150-mile, five-stop route that will take participants on a scenic ride with stops at participating VFWs.

Participants will be given a map and a scorecard. There also will be extra hands available to purchase for $5 at the end of the run.

The person with the best and worst poker hand at the end will win a cash prize.
There will be a bags tournament at the Mendota Moose Lodge beginning at 3 p.m. with a dinner starting at 5 p.m.

There also will be a 50-50 raffle, a silent auction and live bands.

District 20 Challenger League holding registration
The Illinois District 20 Challenger League, which is for individuals with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, is holding registration from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at the Illinois Valley YMCA in Peru.

Nominations due for Hall Hall of Fame
Nominationsfor the Hall High School Athletic Hall of Fame must be turned in to the high school athletic office no later than Tuesday, May 14.

Physicals available at Mendota High School
Sports physicals for all Mendota High School students will begin at 3 p.m. May 15-16, in the school gym.

Mendota Community Hospital staff will be available to conduct the physicals at a cost of $25 (cash only).

Illinois High School Association forms have been mailed to all MHS students. Additional forms are available by contacting the school at (815) 539-7446.

The school encourages all families to take advantage of the on-site physicals. Paperwork from the physicals can stay at the school.

Appointments are not required for the physicals at the school.

Sunset Horseshoe League having signup
The Sunset Horseshoe League will start at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6 and will run each Thursday until Aug. 29.

The league will be at Centennial Park in Peru. The fee is $30.

There will be a picnic at the end of the season, trophies and a T-shirt.

Mendota boys basketball holding youth camp
The Mendota boys basketball program is holding a youth camp June 3-7 in the MHS gym.

Grades 3-5 (based on the 2013-14 school year) will go from 8-9:30 a.m., while grades 6-8 will go from 10 a.m. to noon.

The camp will be run by MHS coach Jan Thompson, his assistants and players.
The fee is $50.

Campers must be registered and paid by May 24 in order to be guaranteed a T-shirt.
