Roundup: Mendota boys tennis beats Princeton

The Mendota boys tennis team picked up a 7-2 win over Princeton Tuesday in non-conference action in Princeton.

James Carroll, Mark Prescott, Joh Hohertz and Ben Foley all picked up singles wins for the Trojans.

MHS swept the doubles portion of the match. Carroll and Prescott won in No. 1 doubles, Cody Phalen and Joey Meyer were victorious in No. 2.

Nick Phalen and Jim Bruno finished off the sweep with a win in No. 3 doubles.

Newman 7, St. Bede 2
Billy Pryde won in No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles duo of Ernie Steinz and Jake Hockings were also victorious, but the Bruins fell short to their Catholic counterparts in non-confernece play Tuesday at Peru.

Ottawa 5, Morris 0
The Pirates swept the Redskins in Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division action in Ottawa.

Jackson Evenson and David Dobrose each earned 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play for OTHS (6-3 NIB 12).

Tyler Linemann and Cayton Conness won No. 1 doubles, Nolan McCorkle and Luke Winchester won in No. 2 doubles and Alec Linemann and Tyler Lukkari wrapped things up with a win in No. 3 doubles.

Geneseo 3, La Salle-Peru 2
The L-P boys tennis team came up just short in NIB 12 West action Tuesday in Geneseo.

The Cavaliers’ No. 1 doubles team of Jake and Trent Lipka picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win and L-P’s No. 2 tandem of Justin Burks and Drake Bruhns also hung on for a 6-3, 6-4 victory. 

Rock Falls 11, Mendota 0 (5 inn.)
The Trojans were shutout in five innings Big Northern Conference West Division action Tuesday in Mendota.

Trae Blumhorst was the losing pitcher for MHS (5-13, 2-5).

Jaron Robinson and Evan Schultz managed the lone two hits off of Rock Falls starter Damon Smith, who finished with 14 strikeouts over his five innings of work.

Heyworth 5, Fieldcrest 0
The Knights (2-14, 2-5 HOIC) were shut out in Heart of Illinois Conference play Tuesday in Wenona.

Jordan Cochran was charged the loss.

Carl Sandburg 21-8, IVCC 9-7
The Eagles were grounded with a pair of losses to Carl Sandburg Tuesday in Oglesby.

The Chargers opened with the runaway 21-7 victory and were able to hold on for a 8-7 win in the nightcap.

Arturo Espinoza was 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI for IVCC in the second game, while Rodrigo Almeraz plated a pair of RBIs.

Streator 5, La Salle-Peru 4
The Lady Cavaliers fell in NIB 12 West action Tuesday in Streator as Streator broke open a 4-4 tie with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Brianna Zeman was charged the loss in relief for L-P.

Abby Turczyn led the Lady Cavs with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with a run scored and RBI.

Princeton 10, IVC 0 (6 inn.)
The Tigresses tamed the Lady Grey Ghosts in NCIC action Tuesday in Princeton.
Madison Menzel pitched the complete-game shutout for PHS (7-8, 2-2 NCIC). She finished with two hits allowed, and six strikeouts with no walks.

Heidi James was 2-for-3 with a a double and pair of RBIs, Mackenzey Wilson added another pair of RBIs off a 2-3 showing at the plate, and Kat Pranka was 3-3 with four RBIs for PHS.

Rock Falls 10,Mendota 5
The Lady Trojans fell behind early after a pair of first-inning runs from Rock Falls and could not catch up in a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division loss Tuesday in Rock Falls.

Mary Wackerlin led the MHS bats as she finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs, including a two-run homer in the sixth.

Ashlyn Kennedy took the loss pitching.

Newark 18, Earlville-Leland 5
The Lady Red Raiders started strong with a three-run top of the first, but couldn’t keep pace with the Lady Norsemen Tuesday in Little Ten Conference action in Newark.

Emily Grace was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and Brooke Buczkiewicz was also 2-for-3 at the plate for E-L (7-6, 7-3 LTC). Jasmine Kerley was charged the loss on the rubber.

At Kewanee
The Bureau Valley boys track and field team continued its relay dominance Tuesday at Kewanee’s Brockman Invite as the Storm claimed three-of-four relay titles.

Kristian and Will Konneck, Daniel Trone and Logan Hoffert teamed up for a win in the 400 meter relay (46.1). Trone, Hoffert, Ryan Taylor and Tucker Schoff raced to victory in the 1,600 relay (3:31), and Taylor, Kane Eastwood, Andrew Smith and Colton Peterson won the 3,200 relay (8:48),

St. Bede’s Steven Gualandri won the 300 hurdles for the Bruins with a time of 40.52.

At Plano
The Mendota girls track team finished second at a 6-team meet Tuesday hosted by Plano.

Kaitlyn Horn earned two victories in the throws for MHS, with a toss of 121-1 in the discus and a top heave of 41-3 in the shot put.

The Lady Trojans 3,200 relay was also a winner.

At Heyworth
Fieldcrest sophomore stamdout Tessa Holland won a Heart of Illinois Conference title Tuesday in Heyworth with a winning leap of 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump.

Maria Baldwin added a second-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 12:17 for the Lady Knights, who  finished seventh in the team scores.

The Fieldcrest boys finished eighth, with Dawson White coming in second in the 110 hurdles (16.12).

Geneseo 6, Ottawa 0
The Lady Pirates were shut out in Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division action Tuesday in Ottawa.

Emily Peterson had 18 saves in goal for OTHS (8-5, 1-4 NIB 12 W).

The IVCC golf team finished third in the second Arrowhead Conference tournament of the season Tuesday at Lake Bracken Country Club in Galesburg. Host Carl Sandburg won the team title.

Tanner Galyen led IVCC with an 83, and Tyler Dobrich was hot on his heels with a round of 84. Logan Koepke added an 85, Alex Harrision carded and 86 and Jake Stiel and Kyle Chase both shot 90 for IVCC.
