Area college golfers are heating up along with the weather in recent weeks.
Olivet Nazarene University’s Gwen Holmes (Sr., Princeton) tied for sixth with an 86 to help ONU win the NAIA Super Regional April 20. The win earned the team a trip to the NAIA Nationals for the first time in school history. Nationals will take place May 21-24 in Lincoln, Neb. Holmes is a team captain and a founding member of the women’s golf program at ONU.
Illinois Central College’s Collin Slattery (So., Princeton) shot a three-round score of 232 (77-79-76) to finish tied for third and help ICC repeat as Mid-West Athletic Conference champions. He earned first-team All-MWAC honors. Slattery also tied for fourth with a two-round score of 149 (78-71) at the Monmouth Scot-Fire Invite over the weekend.
Central College’s Jon Prescott (So., Mendota) is tied for 30th with a two-round score of 169 (87-82) after the first two rounds of the Iowa Conference Championships, which took place over the weekend.
Monmouth College’s Eric Farrell (Jr., Ottawa) tied for 48th with a two-round score of 169 (91-78) at the Monmouth Scot-Fire Invite on Friday and Saturday. He also shot an 86 at the Illinois College McNaughton Memorial Invitational April 15.
Quincy University’s Bekki Prokup (Jr., St. Bede) shot a two-round score of 203 (101-102) to finish tied for 66th at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Golf Championships on Saturday and Sunday. She also shot a 214 (110-104) to place 75th at The Triton Spring Invitational April 14-15.
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Katie Gregorich (So., St. Bede) tied for seventh after shooting a 90 at the Augustana Invitational April 27. She also tied for 13th with an 86 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Spring Fling April 19-20.
Track and field
Olivet Nazarene University’s Alex Ortiz (So., Ottawa) placed fourth in the 400 meters (1:00.56) and fifth in the 200 meters (27.21) and was part of winning 400-meter (49.38) and 1,600-meter (4:06.72) relays at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships April 20. ONU won its fourth conseucitve team title.
Also at the CCAC Championships, Judson University’s Justine McDowell (Jr., Mendota) placed 10th in the 5,000 meters (19:07.28) and was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that placed fourth (11:33.75), while teammate Cassie Criminger (Jr., BV) placed 17th in the 1,500 meters (5:35.43) and was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that placed fourth (11:33.75). Judson placed third as a team, its best-ever finish at the meet.
ONU’s Ortiz also was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed 14th (3:54.11) at the Drake Relays over the weekend. Also at the Drake Relays, Augustana College’s Lorraine Stamberger (So., LaMoille) was part of the distance medley relay team that placed 10th (12:21.27) and the 3,200-meter relay team that placed 11th (9:22.24), while Mount Mercy University’s Liz Mosbach (Fr., Hall) was part of the 800-meter relay team that placed 17th (1:47.83), the 1,600-meter relay team that placed 24th (4:03.06) and the 3,200-meter relay team that placed 18th (9:51.13).
Stamberger was seventh in the 1,500 meters (4:52.92) at the Augustana Invitational April 20 as well.
Mosbach also won the 800 meters (2:26.47) and the long jump (4.86m) and was part of the winning 3,200-meter relay first (10:11.85) at the Statesmen Relays April 19-20. Older brother T.J. Mosbach (Jr., Hall) won the 1,500 meters (4:15.90) and the 5,000 meters (16:51.01) and was part of the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team that placed third (3:51.07) at the Statesmen Relays.
At the Beloit Relays over the weekend, Judson’s McDowell placed fifth in the 800 meters (2:33.75), while Criminger finished 18th in the 1,500 meters (5:32.96). North Park University’s Natalie Swanson (Fr., BV) placed fifth in the discus (115-3), ninth in the shot put (33-10.25) and 13th in the hammer throw (103-6). She also was fifth in the shot put (35-8.5) and sixth in the discus (112-8) at the Concordia University Cougar Invitational April 19-20.
At the Benedictine University Twilight on Saturday, Illinois State University’s Kendall Rush (Sr., Hall) placed second in the triple jump (37-4), seventh in the long jump (16-11.25) and was part of the winning 400-meter relay, while teammate Kimi Sanden (Fr., BV) placed sixth in the 1,500 meters (4:50.67). ISU’s Laura Fredenhagen (Fr., Princeton) tied for sixth in the pole vault (10-2.75).
ISU’s Luke Wielgopolan (Sr., Ottawa) placed fifth in the hammer throw (166-5) and 16th in the discus (131-3), while teammate Scott Janusick (So., Hall) placed ninth in the 3,000 meters (8:47.40).
North Central College’s Adam Weidner (Fr., BV) placed fifth in the shot put (47-5.75). He finished second in the shot put (48-0) at the Wheaton College Don Church Twilight April 20.
A week earlier at the Illinois State University Redbird Invitational, ISU’s Rush won the triple jump (38-11) and placed fourth in the long jump (17-10.25), while Sanden was sixth in the 800 meters (2:21.67). Fredenhagen was 10th in the pole vault (9-10).
On the men’s side, Wielgopolan was fifth in the discus (142-3) and fifth in the hammer throw (173-1), while Janusick finished 12th in the 1,500 meters (4:10.73) and 23rd in the 800 meters (2:06.15). Eastern Illinois University’s Derrick Johnson (Fr., BV) placed ninth in the 1,500 meters (4:03.75) and 20th in the 800 meters (2:02.75).
Monmouth College’s Jake Barr (Sr., Mendota) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:33.3) and placed second in the 5,000 meters (15:19.92) at the Augustana Meet of Champions April 20. Also at the meet, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Anthony Urbanski (So., Hall) placed fourth in the 800 meters (1:55.25). Urbanski placed 13th in the 1,500 meters (4:22.21) at the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative Meet on Saturday.
The University of Illinois’ Hunter Mickow (Sr., Princeton) placed sixth in the 10,000 meters elite section (29:20.45) at the Mt. SAC Relays April 19.
The United States Naval Academy’s Brandon Swindler (Jr., L-P) placed fifth in the hammer throw (172-5) at the University of Florida Tom Jones Memorial April 20 and was 18th in the hammer throw (163-8) at the Penn Relays over the weekend.
King College’s Tom Lamkin (So., Mendota) placed third in the hammer throw (36.15m), sixth in the discus (36.16m) and 18th in the shot put (10.17m) at the Conference Carolinas Championships April 19-20.
Bradley University’s Nick Skromme (Sr., Marquette) placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:59.14) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed third (3:38.54) at the Northern Illinois University Huskie Open April 20. He also placed 24th in the 1,500 meters (4:13.18) at the Butler University Stan Lyons Invitational on Saturday.
Campbell University’s Evan Darm (So., Marquette) placed eighth in the 10,000 meters (31:45.50) and 16th in the 5,000 meters (15:17.27) at the Big South Outdoor Championships April 18-20.
Greenville College’s Coree Woltering (Sr., Ottawa) placed third in the 1,500 meters (4:06.71) at the Illinois College True Blue Open on Saturday and was second in the 5,000 meters (15:22.09) at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet April 19.
St. Norbert College’s Taylor Miller (Fr., St. Bede) placed 12th in the 800 meters (2:38.25) at the Wisconsin Private College Championships on Saturday and finished 18th in the 400 meters (1:10.87) and 32nd in the 200 meters (33.64) at the St. Norbert Invitational April 20.
Iowa Western Community College’s Cody Taylor (So., BV) placed 37th in the 800 meters (2:06.43) at the Doane Relays April 19-20.
Valparaiso University’s Karch Kowalczyk (RS Jr., L-P) is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and has two walks, 10 strikeouts and four saves in 14 innings.
South Dakota State University’s Reid Clary (So., Princeton) is batting .309 with five doubles, two triples and eight RBIs.
Tiffin University’s Nick Hueneburg (So., St. Bede) is hitting .282 with six doubles, a triple, two home runs and 16 RBIs.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Katie Schultz (Fr., Fieldcrest) ended the regular season hitting .282 with four doubles, a triple, a home run and 10 RBIs. UMSL (35-11, 26-4) won its second Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division title in the last three years.
Monmouth College’s Bailey Roberts (Fr., BV) is hitting .333 with three doubles, a home run and six RBIs, while teammate Sam Sons (Sr., St. Bede) is hitting .226 with three doubles and seven RBIs.
