Area college track and field athletes performing well

Area track and field athletes have been putting up some big performances in the past couple weeks.

Monmouth College’s Jake Barr (Sr., Mendota) shattered the school record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:39.87 to finish fourth in the event at the Western Illinois University Lee Calhoun Invitational Friday and Saturday. The previous school record, set in 2005, was 8:58.43. Barr was also 20th in the 1,500 meters (4:08.80).

Barr was also named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week on April 2 after running a lifetime best 10,000 meters time of 31:24.65 at the Washington University Invitational. He also won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:46.16) at the Ashford University Spring Classic April 6.

Illinois State University’s Kendall Rush (Sr., Hall) won the triple jump with a leap of 11.89 meters and placed ninth in the long jump (4.90m) at the Drake University Jim Duncan Invitational over the weekend. Mount Mercy University’s T.J. Mosbach (Jr., Hall) placed third in the 10,000 meters (32:45.34) in the meet, as well.

n Also at the Jim Duncan Invitational, Mount Mercy’s Liz Mosbach (Fr., Hall) placed 13th in the long jump (4.81m), 18th in the 400 meters (1:01.35) and 28th in the 1,500 meters (5:12.27). ISU’s Kimi Sanden (Fr., BV) finished 14th in the 800 meters (2:21.50), while teammate Laura Fredenhagen (Fr., Princeton) tied for seventh in the pole vault (3.20m).

On the men’s side, ISU’s Luke Wielgopolan (Sr., Ottawa) placed ninth in the hammer throw (52.27m) and 12th in the discus (43.36m), while teammate Scott Janusick (So., Hall) placed 11th in the 5,000 meters (15:20.98) and 27th in the 1,500 meters (4:19.36).

A week earlier at the Ashford University Spring Classic, Mount Mercy’s Liz Mosbach placed third in the long jump (15-9), fourth in the 800 meters (2:25.66) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed third (4:16.24), while T.J. Mosbach was fifth in the 5,000 meters (16:39.77).

n Also at the Lee Calhoun Invitational over the weekend, Bradley University’s Nick Skromme (Sr., Marquette) ran a season-best time of 10:03.09 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to place sixth and was also part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed 10th (3:32.10).

n At the Benedictine University Eagle Invitational Saturday, Olivet Nazarene University’s Alex Ortiz (So., Ottawa) placed third in the 400 meters (59.06), 14th in the 200 meters (26.56) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed third (4:02.91). Judson University’s Justine McDowell (Jr., Mendota) placed 17th in the 5,000 meters (19:30), while teammate Cassie Criminger (Jr., BV) placed 63rd in the 1,500 meters (5:46.09), as well.

McDowell was also eighth in the 5,000 meters (19:44.89) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Rex Foster Invitational April 5, while Criminger was 19th in the 1,500 meters (5:38.60).

Ortiz also placed 18th in the 400 meters (1:01.42) at the Chicagoland Championships April 4. North Park University’s Natalie Swanson (Fr., BV) placed 13th in the discus (35.71m) and 17th in the shot put (10.69m) — which were both personal bests — at the meet, as well. She was also 36th in the hammer throw (30.86m).

Swanson also was third in the discus (107-06) and seventh in the shot put (33-6.75) at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational Saturday. St. Norbert College’s Taylor Miller (Fr., St. Bede) finished eighth in the 400 meters (1:14.26) and was part of the 800-meter sprint medley relay team that placed fourth at that meet, as well. Miller was also 11th in the 400 meters (1:13.57) at the Carroll University Invitational April 6.

n The University of Illinois’ Hunter Mickow (Sr., Princeton) placed seventh in the 5,000 meters (14:21.82) at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic April 5-6.

n North Central College’s Adam Weidner (Fr., BV) placed third in the shot put (14.62m) and 20th in the discus (37.08m) at the Chicagoland Championships April 4. North Central won the team title.

n Greenville College’s Coree Woltering (Sr., Ottawa) placed fourth in the 800 meters (1:59.05) and fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:05.50) at the Washington University Select Meet April 6. He also placed 32nd in the 5,000 meters at the St. Louis University Invitational Saturday.

n The United States Naval Academy’s Brandon Swindler (Jr., L-P) placed sixth in the hammer throw (51.41m) at the George Mason Invitational Saturday.

n The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Anthony Urbanski (So., Hall) placed fourth in the 800 meters (1:55.47) at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational Saturday. He was also fifth in the 800 meters (2:00.53) at the Whitewater Rex Foster Invitational April 5.

n Eastern Illinois University’s Derrick Johnson (Fr., BV) placed 16th in the 1,500 meters (4:08.36) and 21st in the 800 meters (2:05.37) at the Western Kentucky Hilltopper Relays Saturday.

n King College’s Tom Lamkin (So., Mendota) placed 10th in the discus (36.04m), 10th in the hammer throw (37.54m) and 21st in the shot put (10.90m) at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational April 5-6.

n Augustana College’s Lorraine Stamberger (So., LaMoille) placed third in the 1,500 meters (5:03.02) and was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that placed second (9:57.63) at the Wartburg Outdoor Select April 5-6.

n Iowa Western Community College’s Cody Taylor (So., BV) placed 64th in the 800 meters (2:05.34) at the Wichita State KT Woodman Classic Friday and Saturday.

Softball
Millkin University’s Rachel Kindred (So., Ottawa) hit a two-run, walk-off double to lift Millkin to a 6-5 win over North Park University Sunday. She went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI in the win. Kindred is hitting .439 with five doubles and 14 RBI this season.

n North Central College’s Amanda Walker (Fr., Ottawa) is hitting .387 with eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 21 RBI. North Central is 25-1.

n Trinity Christian College’s Anna Phillips (So., BV) leads the team with a .365 average and has two triples, six RBI and a team-high 20 runs scored. She also has a team-high 12 stolen bases.

n The University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Katie Schultz (Fr., Fieldcrest) is hitting .295 with four doubles, a triple and nine RBI.

n Bradley University’s Brittany Burgess (So., St. Bede) is hitting .284 with two RBI this season.

n Monmouth College’s Bailey Roberts (Fr., BV) is hitting .333 with three doubles, a home run and six RBI. Teammate Sam Sons (Sr., St. Bede) is hitting .263 with two doubles and six RBI, as well.

n Western Illinois University’s Kelsey Michelini (Sr., L-P) is 4-10 with a 5.06 ERA in 94 innings pitched with 57 walks and 63 strikeouts.

n Iowa Wesleyan College’s Sam Shepard (So., BV) is hitting .231 with two doubles and three RBI.

n Graceland University’s Alyssa James (Sr., Princeton) is hitting .206 with three doubles and five RBI.

n Beloit College’s Bethany Stavrakas (Fr., St. Bede) is hitting .136 this season.

n Illinois State University’s Kelsey Turczyn (So., L-P) is hitting .111 with an RBI in nine at-bats.

n Rockford College’s Sara Smoode (Jr., Hall) is hitting .042 with an RBI in 24 at-bats.

Baseball
South Dakota State University’s Reid Clary (So., Princeton) is hitting .357 with four doubles, two triples and six RBI.

n Tiffin University’s Nick Hueneburg (So., St. Bede) is batting .321 with five doubles, one triple, two home runs and 16 RBI.

n Valparaiso University’s Karch Kowalczyk (RS Jr., L-P) is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 9 2/3 innings pitched with two walks, five strikeouts and three saves. He is also hitting .174 with a double and four RBI in 23 at-bats.

n Heartland Community College’s Mason Snyder (So., Marquette) is hitting .344 with four doubles, a home run and 14 RBI.

n Illinois State University’s Dave Suarez (Jr., L-P) is 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 2/3 innings pitched with six walks and eight strikeouts. Teammate Matt Schmitt (Sr., L-P) is 0-0 with an 11.74 ERA in 7 2/3 innings pitched with two walks and four strikeouts.

n Southern Illinois University’s Lee Weld (RS Jr., Fieldcrest) is 2-2 with a 5.52 ERA in 14 2/3 innings pitched with 12 walks and 19 strikeouts.

n McKendree University’s Josh Tonozzi (Fr., Putnam County) is 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA in 29 2/3 innings pitched with eight walks and 12 strikeouts.

n Monmouth College’s Andrew Baudino (Jr., Ottawa) is hitting .271 with three doubles and 11 RBI, while teammate Brik Wedekind (Jr., Princeton) is 0-4 with a 4.42 ERA in 36 2/3 innings pitched with 20 walks and 25 strikeouts.

n North Park University’s Zak Worsley (So., Marquette) is hitting .257 with four doubles, two triples and 13 RBI.
n Illinois Central College’s Jason Condit (So., Henry) is 4-2 with a 3.41 ERA in 37 innings pitched with 14 walks and 32 strikeouts.

n Waubonsee Community College’s Ryan Dornink (Fr., Mendota) is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in six innings pitched with six walks and four strikeouts.
n St. Ambrose University’s Michael Lynch (Fr., L-P) is 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA in 11 2/3 innings pitched with five walks and 10 strikeouts.

n Rockford College’s Kyle Pisano (Jr., L-P) is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 24 innings pitched with five walks and 12 strikeouts. Teammate Zac Wolf (Sr., L-P) is 1-1 with a 10.12 ERA in 10 2/3 innings pitched with five walks and five strikeouts.

n Roosevelt University’s Nathan Greene (Jr., Ottawa/IVCC) is batting .242 with a double, a triple and eight RBI.

n North Central College’s John King (Jr., BV) is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 1 1/3 innings pitched with no walks and one strikeout.

n Eureka College’s Nate Louis (Jr., Henry) is hitting .250 in four at-bats.

n Parkland College’s Jake Sale (Fr., Putnam County) is 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA in 3 1/3 innings pitched with seven walks and four strikeouts.

Golf
Olivet Nazarene University’s Gwen Holmes (Sr., Princeton) placed third overall with a two-round score of 161 (79-82) at the University of St. Francis (Ind.) Spring Invitational. ONU placed third as a team.

n Central College’s Jon Prescott (So., Mendota) tied for 19th with a two-round score of 155 (77-78) at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational April 5-6 and then tied for 21st with a two-round score of 154 (78-76) at the Millkin Weist Foundation Classic Friday and Saturday. Central finished second as a team.

n Illinois Wesleyan University’s Ali Stevenson (So., Ottawa) tied for 54th with a two-round score of 178 (83-95) at the IWU Spring Fling Saturday and Sunday. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Katie Gregorich (So., St. Bede) finished tied for 84th with a two-round score of 193 (102-91) in the invitational, as well.

n Monmouth College’s Eric Farrell (Jr., Ottawa) tied for 44th with a two-round score of 163 (86-77) at the Augustana Invitational Friday and Saturday.

n Illinois Central College’s Collin Slattery (So., Princeton) placed 51st with a score of 88 at the Olivet Nazarene Spring Open April 3.

n Judson University’s Jordan Twidell (Jr., BV) tied for 67th with a 95 at the Elmhurst College Invitational April 2 and tied for 53rd (84) at the University of St. Francis Invitational April 9.

n Benedictine University’s Bailey Weber (Fr., Marquette) placed 63rd overall with a two-round score of 218 (107-111) at the University of St. Francis Spring Invitational March 29-30.

Tennis
Illinois Wesleyan University’s Aaron Guenther (Jr., Ottawa) is 1-2 at No. 3 singles and 6-4 at No. 4 singles this season. He is also 7-6 at No. 2 doubles.

n Western Illinois University’s Patrick Hammers (Sr., L-P) earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles in a 4-3 win over IUPUI Sunday. He is 2-13 overall in singles play and 1-13 in doubles play.

n St. Louis College of Pharmacy’s Andy Sickley (Fr., L-P) earned a doubles win in a 5-4 win over Concordia Seminary April 5.
