Softball: Schweickert tosses perfect game as St. Bede beats Hall

St. Bede softball coach Bill Prokup has never seen anything like it.

Hall coach Pete Kasperski has never seen anything better.

On Monday afternoon, St. Bede senior Lainie Schweickert mowed down the Lady Red Devils for her second perfect game of the season to lead the Lady Bruins to an 11-0, six-inning victory in Spring Valley.

Schweickert was dominating even by perfect game standards.

The Lady Bruin ace struck out 17 of 18 batters and did not allow a ball to be put into fair territory.

“It’s the greatest pitching performance I’ve seen by a high school pitcher,” Kasperski said. “Even if we would have played a perfect game with our gloves, it wouldn’t have made a difference when you can’t even put it in play. I can count how many times we fouled the ball off. That was the best pitching performance I’ve seen by a high school pitcher by far.”

The only batter not to strike out — lead-off hitter Deidra Whightsil — popped up a bunt in fair territory that was caught by St. Bede catcher Lydia Stariha.

“She was around the plate. I don’t think she threw a lot of pitches either, which is good,” Prokup said. “You can’t ask for more of her. … It’s nice to see her rewarded for all the hard work she does. … I’ve never seen (anything like it).”

Schweickert relied heavily on her screw ball and rise ball while rarely using her change up.

“It feels good,” Schweickert said about throwing another perfect game. “It’s always good to get out there and strike everyone out, but we also had a lot of good hitting and we were confident.”

Offensively, the Lady Bruins were patient and took advantage of walks and errors.
St. Bede got on the board in the first inning when Stariha led off with a walk and scored on a fielder’s choice by Mo Dean.

The Lady Bruins added two runs in the second on an RBI single by Schweickert and a throwing error.

St. Bede later took advantage of a five-walk third inning to score three runs and capitalized on a four-error fourth inning for two runs and a three-error sixth inning for three more runs.

No. 8 hitter Nicole Yaklich went 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs and an RBI, while No. 9 hitter Ella Voss was 1-for-3 with a double, a run, a sacrifice fly and an RBI.

“Our bats came around a little bit today, which helped. Hopefully, we can carry this forward,” Prokup said. “It was nice to see our (Nos.) 8-9 hitters do well. Ella worked hard Friday and Saturday to try to get her swing back and she hit the ball and made solid contact every time.”

Kiley Whightsil took the loss for Hall (2-6), which made eight errors in the game.

“On top of (our lack of offense), we couldn’t field the ball, we couldn’t throw the ball and when we did throw the ball we threw it to the wrong base.”
