TISKILWA — The second try was the charm Thursday for the Princeton girls soccer team.

The Tigresses capitalized on a pair of second-chance goals to get out in front and added another pair of scores late in the second half en route to a 4-0 victory over IVC at the Tiskilwa soccer pitch.

Sophomore forward Maria Vitale put PHS on the board in the 22nd minute when she collected a carom of a teammate’s shot that deflected off the crossbar and punched in a follow up shot to IVC keeper Meri Terpstra’s right.

After taking a 1-0 lead into intermission, the Tigresses struck again in the second half when junior midfielder Michelle Kelly plucked a deflection away from Terpstra and then beat the Lady Grey Ghost defense to the ball with a short kick directly in front of the goal to put PHS up 2-0 in the 61st minute.

“It’s all about being aggressive — you have to have that mentality,” said PHS coach Ed Young, whose squad advanced to 2-3 with the win. “The second-chance shots are not always the prettiest goals, but it takes a killer instinct to follow the shots.

“We told the girls early this year that we maybe weren’t going to have too many first shots go in and that we’re going to have to clean up and be constantly aggressive. We did that tonight.”

Freshman Eliza Young made it a three-goal advantage for Princeton with a score in the 66th minute from the left side that was set up by her own corner kick and subsequent assist from sophomore defender Eliie Bonucci.

PHS freshman midfielder Michaela Strom made things academic for the home side with a score in the 75th minute off a cross from junior midfielder Emma Reidner to give PHS its final 4-0 margin of victory.

Princeton junior goalkeeper Kelly Schmidt registered five saves for the Tigresses in the shutout, including turning away a pair of shots on a threatening corner-kick sequence from IVC (0-3-1) in the 63rd minute to preserve the early 1-0 PHS lead.

“Kelly did a nice job positioning herself and did a nice job with her hands. I didn’t see her put a ball on the ground,” said Young, who also credited sweeper Becca Turpen and the rest of the PHS defense for the shutout. “All our defensive backs and our keeper had a great effort. Defense is such a team thing, They’ve got to be linked together and they were.”

Note: Princeton won the sophomore contest 2-1.
