Boys roundup: Schmitt pitches Hall baseball to victory

NT Sports Staff

Hall junior Austin Schmitt tossed a complete game Wednesday to lead the Red Devil baseball team to a 4-1 non-conference victory at Seneca.

Schmitt allowed one run on five hits while striking out four batters and walking two.

Pete Mautino and Ian Trevier each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Hall (5-1), while Blake Moreno also drove in a run.

Hall led 3-0 after 2 ½ innings.

Marquette 11, Hinckley-Big Rock 5
Crusader lead-off hitter Trystin Raikes went 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs and an RBI on Wednesday to help Marquette to a non-conference victory at home.

Skippy Martini had three RBIs, while Austin McDonnell and Logan Sparks each hit a double and drove in a pair of runs.

Tyler Verona earned the win on the mound as he gave up four runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and six walks in five innings.

Marquette (6-2) scored three runs in the first inning and built a 5-0 lead before H-BR scored four times in the fifth.

Hiawatha 7, Earlville-Leland 0
Brock Kreiter gave up two runs and struck out 10 batters in five innings Wednesday, but the Red Raider offense didn’t back up the effort in a season-opening loss.

E-L managed just three hits in the Little Ten Conference defeat in Kirkland.

Kankakee 4, IVCC 2
La Salle-Peru graduate Levi Ericson went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs Wednesday as the Eagles fell in a non-conference game in Oglesby.

Rodrigo Almarez had a pair of RBIs for IVCC, while Garrett Gruenwald took the loss in relief.

At Byron
Mendota’s Wyatt Martinson set a school record in the 100-meter dash Wednesday at the Byron Freshman/Sophomore Invitational.

Martinson finished the race — which used Fully Automated Timing — in 10.76 seconds.

The old record was a hand-timed 10.8 by Dustin Kent, which converts to an 11.04 FAT time.
