Roundup: Ottawa softball wins opener

The Ottawa softball team opened the season Tuesday with an easy 12-3 victory over Plano in Ottawa.

Samantha Halm had a big day at the plate as she went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while the Lady Pirates also capitalized on four Plano errors to score seven unearned runs.

Hillary Hon earned the win in relief as she tossed two scoreless innings. She allowed no hits while striking out a pair of batters and walking one.

Rock Island Alleman 24, Marquette 0, 5 inn.

Carly Oakes took the loss as the Lady Crusaders suffered a non-conference loss Tuesday in Ottawa.

BASEBALL
Rock Island 11, La Salle-Peru 7
Kyle Jenkins had two hits and a pair of RBIs Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough as the Cavaliers dropped a non-conference game on the road.

Kyle Rothrock and Andres Martinez had two hits each for L-P (2-2), while Bret Storm took the loss.

Ottawa 18, Plano 8, 5 inn.
Michael Hermosillo smacked a home run, a double and had six RBIs Tuesday as the Pirates routed Plano in a non-conference game in Plano.

Cahill Horner went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Alex Miller earned the win on the mound. He allowed three earned runs on nine hits in four innings.

GIRLS SOCCER
Plano 4, Hall 1
Vanessa Olivares scored the Lady Red Devils’ first goal of the season as Hall fell in a non-conference game on the road.

BOYS TENNIS
Pontiac 8, La Salle-Peru 1
Trent Lipka earned the Cavaliers’ lone victory Tuesday in a non-conference loss at Hegeler Park in La Salle.

Princeton 5, Newman 4
The Tigers earned three singles victories and a pair of doubles wins Tuesday to win a non-conference home match.

Garrett Kostello won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Zach Hicks picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles and Ian Nichols earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles.

In doubles, Brady Frank and Elliot Beetz won 6-1, 1-6, 10-5 at No. 1 and Kostello and Hicks earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2.
