MENDOTA — When Mendota senior Rachel Barr was looking at colleges, her father, Terry, mentioned Carl Sandburg College as a possibility.
Barr initially balked at the idea but agreed to stop and check it out on the way to visiting Southeastern Community College in Iowa.
“It was right on the way so we decided to stop by and check it out, and I actually ended up loving it,” Barr said. “Maybe (my dad) knows me better than I think he does.”
Barr signed her National Letter of Intent to play for the Chargers on Thursday afternoon with her parents, Terry and Cheryl, in attendance along with Mendota coach John Holzman and Carl Sandburg coach Todd Winkler.
“I had a couple different opportunities, but I felt (Carl Sandburg) was the better fit for me,” said Barr, who also looked at Southeastern, Sauk Valley and a couple NCAA Division III schools. “Financially, this was the best route for me. … The coach (Winkler) is really helpful and he seems like he’ll really help me grow as a player. Also, the apartments are very nice.”
Winkler expects Barr, a NewsTribune First-Team All-Area selection as a senior, will make an immediate impact.
“She’ll definitely contribute for us,” Winkler said. “She’s going to replace a middle who was all-region and all-conference and I don’t see that she’ll miss a beat. She has what it takes to play at that level. I like what she brings to the table. I like her enthusiasm. I like her determination.”
Holzman, who’s also had seniors Brianna Correa and Hollie Reppin sign recently, said he thinks Barr will do well at Carl Sandburg.
“She’s going to bring a dedication to the sport and intensity,” Holzman said. “It’s just exciting to see players move on to play college volleyball. She’s going to be a great addition and Carl Sandburg is going to be a good fit for her.”
