2012-13 Boys Basketball All-Area Teams


Sports Staff




First Team
Trae Blumhorst, Mendota
Year: Senior
Position: Forward
Season Highlights: Blumhorst was the driving force behind the Trojans’ best record since 1996 (19-13) and first regional title since 1999. The unanimous All-Big Northern Conference West Division pick was top 10 in the area in scoring (16.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.9) while also averaging 2.9 assists per game. He also helped MHS to the Colmone Classic title.

Brett Fanning, Hall
Year: Senior
Position: Guard
Season Highlights: The prolific scorer led the area in points at 22.1 per game and finished second on Hall’s career scoring list. He shot 46 percent from the field, including 38 percent from 3-point range. He could do more than score as he averaged 5.4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.7 steals. Fanning was named IBCA Class 2A Special Mention All State.

Joe Pyszka, St. Bede
Year: Senior
Position: Center
Season Highlights: The 6-foot-7, 260-pound Pyszka was a force to be reckoned with in the paint. He was top 10 in the area in points (15.6 ppg), rebounds (10.1 rpg) and blocks (1.7 bpg) while leading the Bruins to a 23-6 record and a Class 2A Bureau Valley Regional title game appearance. He was IBCA Special Mention All State in Class 2A.

Brady Sanders, Fieldcrest
Year: Senior
Position: Guard
Season Highlights: Sanders led the Knights to another successful season that included a 12-0 record in the Heart of Illinois Conference and a regional title. The IBCA First-Team All State selection averaged 17.8 points while leading the area with 5.1 assists per game. He also averaged 5.1 rebounds, shot 54 percent from the floor and 86 percent from the line.

Jens Soderholm, La Salle-Peru
Year: Senior
Position: Guard/Forward
Season Highlights: The NT Boys Basketball Player of the Year was one of the area’s top all-around threats. He was second in the area in scoring (21.8 ppg) and first in rebounding (11 rpg). The unanimous Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division MVP also averaged 2.1 assists and 2 steals per game. He was honorable mention Class 3A AP All State.

Second Team
John Carroll, Ottawa
Year: Junior
Position: Forward
Season Highlights: The unanimous All-NIB 12 West pick led the Pirates in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg) while also averaging 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals.

Harold Fay, Putnam County
Year: Junior
Position: Guard
Season Highlights: The All-Tri-County Conference First Team pick averaged 14.7 points, 3.7 assists and 1.9 steals as he led the Panthers to TCC regular season, TCC tournament and regional titles.

Nathan Helle, Henry
Year: Junior
Position: Forward
Season Highlights: The All-TCC First-Team pick led Henry in scoring (15.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.7 rpg). He led the Mallards to their first 20-win season since 1976-77.

Elliot Kowalski, Marquette
Year: Senior
Position: Forward
Season Highlights: Kowalski averaged 14.2 points and was top 10 in the area in rebounding (9.3 rpg), blocks (1.3), assists (3) and steals (2.2). He was an All-TCC Second-Team pick.

Noah Lamboley, La Salle-Peru
Year: Junior
Position: Guard
Season Highlights: The 3-point sharpshooter (38.2 percent) averaged 14.7 points, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals for the NIB 12 West champions. He was an All-NIB 12 West pick.

Third Team
James Carroll, Mendota
Year: Sophomore
Position: Guard
Season Highlights: The All-BNC West pick averaged 12.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2 assists per game. He had 22 points in the regional semifinals and in the final to help MHS to the title.

Brad Groleau, St. Bede
Year: Senior
Position: Guard
Season Highlights: The IBCA Class 2A Special Mention All-State selection was second on the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game in helping the Bruins to a 23-6 record.

Curtiss Johnson, Marquette
Year: Senior
Position: Guard
Season Highlights: The All-TCC First Team pick missed the start of the season but made an impact after returning as he averaged 14.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.6 steals.

Brandon Morris, LaMoille-Ohio
Year: Junior
Position: Forward
Season Highlights: The Ohio student was a double-double machine as he averaged 16.7 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. He also led the area in blocks (2 bpg).

Parker Neuhalfen, Bureau Valley
Year: Sophomore
Position: Guard
Season Highlights: Neuhalfen was top 10 in the area in scoring at 15.4 points per game. The IBCA Special Mention All-State pick also averaged 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
