Fay, William Penn end memorable season

It was certainly a memorable season for William Penn University’s Kevin Fay.

The junior from Putnam County and IVCC finished the year averaging 10.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while also amassing 55 assists, 21 steals and six blocks in helping the Statesmen advance to the NAIA Division II national championship game March 12. William Penn lost to Cardinal Stritch 73-59 in the championship, but still finished the year 34-2, which was the best season in school history.

During the tournament run, Fay has several strong games. He scored seven points and had three rebounds and an assist in a 101-84 win over Bethel March 8 and six points and four rebounds in a 67-66 win over Midland March 9.

He then scored 11 points and had two assists and a rebound in a 79-58 win over Grace in the semifinals before finishing the season with seven points, three rebounds, an assist and a block in the national championship game.

South Dakota State University’s Reid Clary (So., Princeton) is tied for the team lead in hitting with a .444 average with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and three runs scored in 18 at-bats.

n Heartland Community College’s Mason Snyder (So., Marquette) is hitting .424 with three doubles and nine RBI in 33 at-bats.

n Tiffin University’s Nick Hueneburg (So., St. Bede) is batting .268 with two doubles, a triple and a team-high eight RBI.

n Southern Illinois University’s Lee Weld (RS Jr., Fieldcrest) is 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 5 2/3 innings pitched with four walks and seven strikeouts.

n Valparaiso University’s Karch Kowalczyk (RS Jr., L-P) has two saves and a 0.00 ERA in 3 2/3 innings pitched. He has two walks and one strikeout.

n Illinois Central College’s Jason Condit (So., Henry) is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in nine innings pitched. He has one walk and nine strikeouts.

n Illinois State University’s Dave Suarez (Jr., L-P) is 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA in four innings pitched with one walk and four strikeouts. Teammate Matt Schmitt (Sr., L-P) is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in four innings pitched. He has one walk and four strikeouts.

n Monmouth College’s Andrew Baudino (Jr., Ottawa) is hitting .278 with five RBI and three runs scored in 36 at-bats, while teammate Brik Wedekind (Jr., Princeton) is 0-1 with a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings pitched with four walks and 10 strikeouts.

n McKendree University’s Josh Tonozzi (Fr., Putnam County) is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings pitched. He has three walks and six strikeouts.

n St. Ambrose University’s Michael Lynch (Fr., L-P) is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in six innings pitched. He has two walks, five strikeouts and one save.

n North Park University’s Zak Worsley (So., Marquette) is batting .211 with a triple, an RBI and a team-high 13 runs scored.

n Roosevelt University’s Nathan Greene (Jr., Ottawa/IVCC) is batting .100 with two RBI and two runs scored in 10 at-bats.

n Rockford College’s Kyle Pisano (Jr., L-P) is 0-0 with a 6.43 ERA in seven innings pitched with four walks and five strikeouts, while teammate Zac Wolf (Sr., L-P) is 0-0 with a 10.80 ERA in five innings pitched. He has one walk and four strikeouts.

n Upper Iowa University’s Cody Booker (Fr., L-P) has scored two runs in two at-bats this season.

North Central College’s Amanda Walker (Fr., Ottawa) leads the team with a .500 average in 14 at-bats and has a double, a triple, a home run and a team-high six RBI.

n Millikin University’s Rachel Kindred (So., Ottawa) is batting .375 with a double and six RBI in 24 at-bats.

n Bradley University’s Brittany Burgess (So., St. Bede) is hitting .281 with 16 hits and two RBI this season.

n Monmouth College’s Bailey Roberts (Fr., BV) is hitting .286 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored, while teammate Sam Sons (Sr., St. Bede) is hitting .176 with a double, five RBI and seven runs scored.

n The University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Katie Schultz (Fr., Fieldcrest) is hitting .269 with a double, a triple, two RBI and four runs scored.

n Iowa Wesleyan College’s Sam Shepard (So., BV) is batting .286 with a double in seven at-bats.

n Graceland University’s Alyssa James (Sr., Princeton) is hitting .185 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.

n Illinois State University’s Kelsey Turczyn (So., L-P) is hitting .200 with an RBI and a run scored in five at-bats.

n Western Illinois University’s Kelsey Michelini (Sr., L-P) is 1-6 with a 4.69 ERA in 56 2/3 innings pitched with 35 walks and 33 strikeouts.

n Beloit College’s Bethany Stavrakas (Fr., St. Bede) is batting .095 with a run scored in 21 at-bats.

n Rockford College’s Sara Smoode (Jr., Hall) is hitting .071 with an RBI in 14 at-bats.

Track and field
The United States Naval Academy’s Brandon Swindler (Jr., L-P) won the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 173-7 at the Point Loma Open in San Diego Saturday.

n Campbell University’s Evan Darm (So., Marquette) finished fifth in the 5,000 meters with a personal-best time of 15:08.69 at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational Friday and Saturday.

n Northern Illinois University’s Ellen Renk (Fr., L-P) placed fifth in the triple jump (35-2) and 22nd in the long jump (15-8.75) at the Bulls Invitational in Tampa, Fla., Friday and Saturday.

n King College’s Tom Lamkin (So., Mendota) placed 31st in the shot put (35-0.5) and 38th in the discus (106-05) at the UNC-Charlotte 49er Classic March 14-16.

Central College’s Jon Prescott (So., Mendota) shot an 80 to place fifth at the University of Illinois-Springfield Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla., March 13.

n Illinois Central College’s Collin Slattery (So., Princeton) tied for 35th with a three-round score of 229 (75-78-76) at the 12th Annual Ron Marshall Spring Fling in Scottsboro, Ala., March 14-17.

n Monmouth College’s Evan Bean (Fr., Putnam County) placed 10th (98) at the Werner Triangular March 13 in Sebring, Fla.

Illinois Wesleyan University’s Aaron Guenther (Jr., Ottawa) is 3-3 overall at No. 4 singles and 4-2 at No. 2 doubles so far this season.

n St. Louis College of Pharmacy’s Andy Sickley (Fr., L-P) earned an 8-2 win in doubles play against Northwestern College March 8 during his team’s trip to Hilton Head, S.C. He is 1-0 in singles play and 1-5 in doubles play this season.

n The University of Illinois-Springfield’s Nick Decker (Jr., L-P) won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles in a 9-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan March 10 and 8-1 at No. 3 doubles in a 9-0 win over Marietta College March 13 on the team’s trip to Hilton Head, S.C.

n Western Illinois University’s Patrick Hammers (Sr., L-P) is 1-11 in singles play and 1-9 in doubles play this season.
