2012-13 All-Area Wrestling Team

Lower weights
Daniel Close, Ottawa

Year: Sophomore
Weight: 138
Season Highlights: The NT Wrestler of the Year had an area-best 39 wins. He placed second at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet and finished fourth at the IHSA Class 2A State Meet.

Collin Groleau, La Salle-Peru
Year: Freshman
Weight: 145
Season Highlights: Groleau made a name for himself in his first season of high school wrestling as he went 25-14. He also placed second at the Class 2A Pontiac Regional to earn a sectional berth.

Devin Jones, Ottawa
Year: Junior
Weight: 132
Season Highlights: Jones finished fifth on the Pirates in wins with a 25-16 record. His best tournament finish came at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet in Sycamore where he placed third in his bracket.

James Peacock, St. Bede
Year: Junior
Weight: 132
Season Highlights: Peacock was a repeat sectional qualifier for the Bruins after placing third in the Rock Falls Regional. He went 23-8 while winning the Seneca Invitational and placing second at the Amboy Invitational.

Jaron Robinson, Mendota
Year: Sophomore
Weight: 120
Season Highlights: Robinson was one of only four area regional champions as he earned his second sectional berth. He compiled a 21-13 record. His resume also included a second-place finish at the Kewanee Invitational.

Riley Sweetland, La Salle-Peru
Year: Junior
Weight: 106
Season Highlights: Sweetland rarely lost this season as he compiled a 23-3 record. He also won the Springfield Lutheran Invitational and claimed a regional championship to advance to the Class 2A Rochelle Sectional.

Jacob Wever, La Salle-Peru
Year: Junior
Weight: 126
Season Highlights: An injury limited Wever’s participation this season, but he made the most of his limited time on the mat as he went 13-6, won the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference title and placed sixth at state.

Upper Weights
Michael Denyes, La Salle-Peru
Year: Senior
Weight: 220
Season Highlights: Denyes placed in every tournament the Cavaliers competed in during the regular season. In the postseason, Denyes placed third at the Class 2A Pontiac Regional to earn a sectional berth. He finished 28-15.

Alex Fuentes, Ottawa
Year: Junior
Weight: 195
Season Highlights: Fuentes ended his season as a state medalist as he placed sixth at the Class 2A State Meet. He also compiled a 32-12 record and finished third at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet.

Ryan Marlett, La Salle-Peru
Year: Senior
Weight: 195
Season Highlights: No La Salle-Peru wrestler racked up more wins than Marlett’s 29. He also won the Springfield Lutheran Invitational and placed second at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet.

Chris Morehouse, La Salle-Peru
Year: Senior
Weight: 170
Season Highlights: Morehouse won the Springfield Lutheran Invitational and finished as the runner up at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet and Class 2A Pontiac Regional, which earned him a sectional berth. He went 18-9.

Drew Pranka, Princeton
Year: Sophomore
Weight: 152
Season Highlights: Pranka was the lone Tiger to finish the season with a winning record as he went 26-14. He beat Amboy’s Jason Bontz 4-3 in the third-place match at the Class 1A Rock Falls Regional to earn a sectional berth.

Cyrano Rayfield, Ottawa
Year: Junior
Weight: 220
Season Highlights: Rayfield racked up a 34-9 record while placing second at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet, the Class 2A Pontiac Regional and the Rochelle Sectional. He advanced to the final day of state.

Sean Taulbee, Ottawa
Year: Junior
Weight: 285
Season Highlights: Taulbee went 29-12 for the Pirates and had several strong tournament finishes. He took third at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet and won his bracket at the Class 2A Pontiac Regional.

La Salle-Peru: Blake Billig, Max Kurkowski, Jake Nolan
St. Bede: John Barnes, Adam Hunter, Brendan Zimmerman
