College Check-Up: Area athletes playing well as postseason approaches

With the postseason right around the corner, area basketball players have been heating up at just the right time.

William Penn University’s Kevin Fay (Jr., Putnam County/IVCC) hit five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 22 points in a 74-62 win over Grand View on Saturday. With the win, William Penn (28-1, 12-0 MCC) recorded its first-ever undefeated conference season and also tied the school record for wins. The Statesmen are ranked No. 1 in the country in NAIA Division II.

Fay is averaging 11.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He also has 46 assists, 19 steals and six blocks.

Judson University’s Anthony Ahlers (Sr., Putnam County) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds in his final home game in a 70-60 win over Roosevelt University Feb. 13. Ahlers is averaging a team-high 10.6 points and 6 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in blocks with 13 and has 25 assists and 12 steals.

Elmhurst College’s Taylor Baxter (Jr., Fieldcrest) is averaging 7.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game and is second on the team with 65 assists. He also has 15 steals and six blocks.

Sauk Valley Community College’s Jacob Fisher (Fr., Princeton) is averaging 0.8 points and 0.8 rebounds per game. He also has two assists and two steals.

Women’s Basketball
Eureka College’s Kourtney Ewald (Sr., Ottawa/IVCC) had six points, two rebounds, an assist and a block in a 75-49 win over Principia on Saturday that clinched a berth in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament for Eureka.

Ewald is averaging 4.2 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. She also has 13 assists and five steals.

Monmouth College’s Lauren Kellen (So., Mendota) is averaging 4.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game and also has 17 steals. Teammate Chelsea Gross (Sr., LaMoille) is averaging 1.2 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. She also has five steals and one assist. Monmouth is 19-4 and 14-4 in Midwest Conference play.

Benedictine University’s Michelle Batty (So., L-P) is averaging 2.1 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. She also is second on the team in assists with 43 and has seven steals. Benedictine (14-12) moved into the semifinals of the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament with a 53-42 win over Alverno on Saturday night. The Eagles will face two-time defending tournament champion Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday.

Lake Forest College’s Lindsay Wallaert (Sr., Hall) had eight points and seven rebounds in a 97-62 loss to Monmouth in the season finale for Lake Forest. Wallaert finished the year averaging 1.7 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. She also had eight steals, four assists and one block.

Lake Forest finished the season with an overall record of 12-11 and 10-8 in the Midwest Conference.

St. Bonaventure University’s Kelcie Rombach (Fr., Ottawa) is averaging 1 point and 0.6 rebounds per game and also has two assists and a steal.

Illinois Wesleyan University’s Emily Considine (So., St. Bede) is averaging 1.3 points and 1.1 rebounds per game in 10 games played. She also has one assist.

Gustavus Adolphus College’s Kelle Nett (Fr., Hall) is averaging 0.9 points and 0.4 rebounds per game in seven games played. She also has an assist.

Track and field
Monmouth College’s Jake Barr (Sr., Mendota) won the 3,000 meters (8:46.37) at the Monmouth Fighting Scot Indoor Invitational Feb. 9. He was followed by Greenville College’s Coree Woltering (Sr., Ottawa) in second (8:52.30).

Barr also placed fourth in the mile with a lifetime-best 4:22.39 at the Wartburg Invitational on Saturday.

The University of Illinois’ Hunter Mickow (Sr., Princeton) was tripped halfway through the race during the 5,000 meters at the FloTrak Husky Classic in Seattle Feb. 8-9 but came back to finish 33rd overall and set a lifetime best of 14:26.30 in the event.

Augustana College’s Lorraine Stamberger (So., LaMoille) placed third in the 600 meters (1:46.53) and was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that set a new PepsiCo Center record (9:34.93) at the Augustana Invitational Feb. 14. She also placed seventh in the 800 meters (2:25.76) at the Grinnell College Darren Young Invitational Feb. 9.

North Central College’s Adam Weidner (Fr., BV) set a new school freshman record with a shot put throw of 50 feet, 10.75 inches to win the event at the Chicagoland Indoor Championships Feb. 8-9.

Judson University’s Justine McDowell (Jr., Mendota) placed 32nd in the mile (6:00.06) on the women’s side, while teammate Cassie Criminger (Jr., BV) was 36th (6:07.94) in the same event.

Weidner also was second in the shot put (50-1.25) at the North Central Cardinal Classic on Friday, while the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Anthony Urbanski (So., Hall) placed ninth in the 400 meters (51.34) in the meet. Urbanski was fifth in the 800 meters (1:56.65) at the WIAC Quad Feb. 9 as well.

North Park University’s Natalie Swanson (Fr., BV) was 13th in the shot put (34-2) and 24th in the weight throw (34-10.25) in the women’s meet at North Central on Friday.

Olivet Nazarene University’s Alex Ortiz (So., Ottawa) placed fourth in the 400 meters (59.46) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed fifth (4:01.68) at the National Christian College Athletic Association Indoor National Championships at Indiana Wesleyan University over the weekend.

Plenty of area track athletes were in action at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet Feb. 8-9. Illinois State University’s Kendall Rush (Sr., Hall) placed third in the triple jump (37-10.5) and 12th in the long jump (16-8.75), while Northern Illinois University’s Ellen Renk (Fr., L-P) was eighth in the triple jump (36-1.5). Olivet Nazarene’s Ortiz placed 18th in the 400 meters (59.38) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed fifth (3:56.62) as well.

Renk also placed fifth in the triple jump (36-7) and tied for sixth in the long jump (16-8.5) at the Ball State Quad on Friday.

On the men’s side at Grand Valley State, Illinois State University’s Luke Wielgopolan (Sr., Ottawa) placed ninth in the weight throw (55-3), while Eastern Illinois University’s Derrick Johnson (Fr., BV) was 88th in the 5,000 meters (15:38.69). Johnson also finished ninth in the mile (4:34.48) at the EIU Friday Night Special on Friday.
Wielgopolan also placed fifth in the weight throw (54-2.75) at the Purdue Boilermaker Invite on Saturday, while teammate Scott Janusick (So., Hall) placed fifth in the 1,000 meters (2:41.98) and 15th in the mile (4:38.86). ISU’s Kimi Sanden (Fr., BV) was 10th in the 800 meters (2:23.58) on the women’s side.

Mount Mercy University’s Liz Mosbach (Fr., Hall) was third in the 800 meters (2:29.02), fourth in the 600 meters (1:42.10), 13th in the long jump (13-11.75) and was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that placed second (10:16.22) at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 9.
Her older brother T.J. Mosbach (Jr., Hall) was third in the 5,000 meters (16:45.35), fifth in the 3,000 meters (9:33.77) and eighth in the mile (4:47.56) at the meet for Mount Mercy.
Liz also was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed third (4:06.51) at the Wartburg Invitational on Saturday.

King College’s Tom Lamkin (So., Mendota) placed fifth in the weight throw with a personal-best 40-0.75 at the Conference Carolinas Indoor Championships over the weekend.

Iowa Western Community College’s Cody Taylor (So., BV) placed fifth in the 1,000 meters (2:42.40) and was part of the distance medley relay team that placed fourth (11:29.18) at the Region XI Indoor Championships over the weekend. He also placed 13th in the 1,000 meters (2:41.91) at the Concordia Invitational Feb. 8.

Baseball
Valparaiso University’s Karch Kowalczyk (RS Jr., L-P) has one save and a 0.00 ERA in one inning pitched.

Illinois State University’s Dave Suarez (Jr., L-P) is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two appearances. He has one walk and two strikeouts. Teammate Matt Schmitt (Sr., L-P) has a 0.00 ERA in one appearance.

Softball
Western Illinois University’s Kelsey Michelini (Sr., L-P) is 1-0 with a 1.91 ERA in 11 innings pitched. She has three walks and four strikeouts.

Graceland University’s Alyssa James (Sr., Princeton) is batting .231 with three doubles and a run scored in five games played.

Bradley University’s Brittany Burgess (So., St. Bede) is batting .182 with four hits and an RBI in 10 games played.

Tennis
Western Illinois University’s Patrick Hammers (Sr., L-P) is 1-8 at No. 1 doubles and 1-8 at No. 1 singles this season.
