Marquette's Lindhout hooks up with Core 6 program

Marquette junior Cole Lindhout hopes to earn a scholarship to play Division I football.

So he spends his offseasons playing 7-on-7 football for traveling squads that help him gain exposure to college coaches.

Last year while playing for a National Underclassmen Combine team, Lindhout faced a team from Core 6 Athletes and was impressed with its talent level.
“Playing against them, I saw a lot of big talent,” Lindhout said. “I thought that could be me and that could be my chance, and I didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity.”

Lindhout met Core 6 founder Paul Szczesny, a former linebacker at Indiana and Arizona State universities, and kept in touch.

That led to an invitation to tryout for the Core 6 7-on-7 team.

Lindhout went through multiple tryouts for the Deerfield-based squad, and the last weekend of January he received good news — he made the team as a wide receiver.

“All smiles,” Lindhout said about his reaction to the news. “I felt good. I’m glad to be apart of it, that I was given the opportunity. I’m thankful.

“It’s the best players. I know I’m not the biggest guy, but it means a lot to be apart of the organization.”

Lindhout will transition from playing running back for the Crusaders to receiver for Core 6.

He ran for 417 yards and eight touchdowns on 60 carries last year while catching 18 passes for 334 yards and five scores in the fall as he helped Marquette to a 10-1 record.

“I’m going to be playing slot receiver, like a Wes Welker kind of deal. That’s what they have in mind for me,” Lindhout said. “It’s going to be different, but I know a lot about the position being a corner, too. … I train every week with a trainer. We’ve been doing a lot of wide receiver work. Just catching the ball is a big difference instead of getting the ball handed to me.”

The team will play more than 20 games in tournaments throughout the Midwest.
“It’s going to be fun,” Lindhout said. “It’s more time to showcase (my) talent before more people.”

Lindhout, who has received some interest and has taken an unofficial visit to Purdue, hopes it leads to scholarship offers.

“I’m hoping to achieve a scholarship,” he said. “It’s the like the biggest 7-on-7 team in the Midwest. We’re going to big tournaments. I’m hoping the scouts notice me and I get get some offers and a scholarship.”

Core 6, which is run by Szczesny and several other former Division I players, sent more than 20 players in the Class of 2013 to Division I schools, including Illinois, Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan and LSU.
