Area track athletes continue to turn in impressive performances in the indoor season.
Campbell University’s Evan Darm (So., Marquette) set a new school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:53.07 at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational over the weekend. The previous school record was 14:57.21. His time was good enough for 21st place.
Monmouth’s Jake Barr (Sr., Mendota) also won the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:13.72 at the Illinois Wesleyan Keck Invitational Friday and Saturday. The time was just five seconds off the school record. Barr was also fourth in the mile run (4:26.93) at the Rose-Hulman Invitational Jan. 26.
Also at the Keck Invitational over the weekend, Illinois State University’s Kendall Rush (Sr., Hall) placed second in the triple jump (37-7.75) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed seventh (4:18.33). Teammate Kimi Sanden (Fr., BV) placed sixth in the 800 meters (2:22.85), while Laura Fredenhagen (Fr., Princeton) placed 10th in the pole vault (9-6.5). ISU’s Luke Wielgopolan (Sr., Ottawa) placed fourth in the weight throw (53-11.25), as well.
At the ISU Redbird Invitational Jan. 26, Rush placed fourth in the triple jump (37-10), seventh in the long jump (16-8.75) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed fifth (4:12.40). Sanden finished 10th in the 800 meters (2:33.98) and 11th in the mile run (5:20.37), while Wielgopolan was third in the weight throw (54-3.75).
Judson University’s Justine McDowell (Jr., Mendota) placed 17th in the 3,000 meters (11:47.48) at the Keck Invitational, as well, while teammate Cassie Criminger (Jr., BV) placed 26th in the same event (12:41.28). A week earlier at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational, McDowell was 25th in the mile run (5:58.44), while Criminger was 32nd (6:21.18).
The University of Illinois’ Hunter Mickow (Sr., Princeton) placed eighth in the 3,000 meters (8:23.65) at the Indiana Relays Jan. 25-26. Eastern Illinois University’s Derrick Johnson (Fr., BV) also placed 30th in the 3,000 meters (9:00.46) and was part of the distance medley relay team that placed ninth (10:47.73) at the meet.
On the women’s side, Northern Illinois University’s Ellen Renk (Fr., L-P) placed fifth in the long jump (5.29m) and seventh in the triple jump (11.42m).
At the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Leonard “Squig” Converse Invitational Friday, Whitewater’s Anthony Urbanski (So., Hall) placed ninth in the 800 meters (1:57.72), while North Central College’s Adam Weidner (Fr., BV) placed 15th in the shot put (46-4.25).
Weidner also finished second in the shot put (49-4.5) at the Carthage College Tadd Metzger Invitational Jan. 25. North Central won the invitational. He also placed ninth in the shot put (49-4.5) at the North Central Cardinal Opener Jan. 18. His throw was seven centimeters shy of the freshman shot put record.
Urbanski was 11th in the 800 meters (1:58.43) at the University of Northern Iowa Jack Jennett Invitational Jan. 25-26, as well.
Olivet Nazarene University’s Alex Ortiz (So., Ottawa) was part of the 800-meter relay team that placed first (1:45.90) and the 1,600-meter relay team that placed first (4:03.05) at the NAIA/NCAA Division III Challenge hosted by ONU Jan. 25-26. Augustana College’s Lorraine Stamberger (So., LaMoille) also placed 10th in the 800 meters (2:28.18) and was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that placed third (9:54.99) in the meet.
Ortiz also was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that finished third (4:11.29) at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational Saturday, while Stamberger placed 13th in the 800 meters (2:29.72) and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed 12th (4:25.72) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Warhawk Invitational Saturday.
Mount Mercy University’s Liz Mosbach (Fr., Hall) placed second in the 800 meters (2:24.77), 14th in the long jump (4.25m) and was part of the distance medley relay team that placed second (13:43.27) at the Cornell College Hilltop Invitational Saturday.
Iowa Western Community College’s Cody Taylor (So., BV) ran a personal-best time of 2:44.77 to finish eighth in the 1,000 meters at the Buena Vista University Dennis Young Classic Saturday.
North Park University’s Natalie Swanson (Fr., BV) placed sixth in the shot put (10.63m) and seventh in the weight throw (11.37m) at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Classic Saturday. She also was fourth in the shot put (35-3.75) and ninth in the weight throw (34-5) at the Chicago Duals Jan. 26.
King College’s Tom Lamkin (So., Mendota) placed 10th in the shot put (35-10) at the Hilton Garden Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., Friday and Saturday. He also was 29th in the shot put (33-6.75) at the Liberty Open Jan. 25-26.
The United States Naval Academy’s Brandon Swindler (Jr., L-P) placed fifth in the weight throw (51-5.75) at Navy’s Wesley A. Brown Invitational Jan. 26.
Judson University’s Anthony Ahlers (Sr., Putnam County) scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in a 67-52 loss to Holy Cross Saturday. He leads the team with 10.7 points per game, 6.1 rebounds per game and 12 blocks. He also has 12 steals.
William Penn University’s Kevin Fay (Jr., Putnam County/IVCC) is averaging 11.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game and also has 42 assists, 17 steals and six blocks. The Statesmen (24-1, 8-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference) are ranked No. 2 in the country in NAIA Division II and have won 10 straight games.
Elmhurst College’s Taylor Baxter (Jr., Fieldcrest) is averaging 8.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He leads the team with 61 assists and also has 14 steals and five blocks.
Sauk Valley Community College’s Jacob Fisher (Fr., Princeton) is averaging 0.8 points and 0.9 rebounds per game in 12 games played. He also has two assists and two steals.
The Monmouth College women’s basketball team defeated Ripon College 62-60 Saturday to earn its school-record 17th win this season. Monmouth’s Lauren Kellen (So., Mendota) is averaging 3.8 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game this season and also has 14 steals. Teammate Chelsea Gross (Sr., LaMoille) is averaging 1.0 points and 1.3 rebounds per game in seven games played. She also has three steals.
Eureka College’s Kourtney Ewald (Sr., Ottawa) is averaging 3.8 points and 1.8 rebounds per game and also has eight assists and three steals.
n Benedictine University’s Michelle Batty (So., L-P) is averaging 2.3 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. She also leads the team with 42 assists and also has six steals.
Illinois Wesleyan University’s Emily Considine (So., St. Bede) is averaging 1.4 points and 1.0 rebounds per game in nine games played. She also has one assist.
Lake Forest College’s Lindsay Wallaert (Sr., Hall) is averaging 1.2 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. She also has six steals, two assists and a block.
n St. Bonaventure University’s Kelcie Rombach (Fr., Ottawa) is averaging 1.2 points and 0.7 rebounds per game and also has two assists and a steal.
Gustavus Adolphus College’s Kelle Nett (Fr., Hall) is averaging 0.8 points and 0.6 rebounds per game in five games played. She also has one assist.
Judson University’s Emily Ragsdale (Jr., Ottawa) suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee earlier this season. She averaged 7.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in nine games played. She also had 25 assists, 13 blocks and three steals.
