The Hall boys basketball team’s offense went missing in the second half of Saturday’s non-conference game against Kewanee in Spring Valley and the result was a 74-46 loss for the Red Devils.

After taking a 19-18 lead after the first quarter, Hall trailed 41-32 at halftime and managed just 14 points after intermission.

“We tried to get to the basket, the ball just didn’t go in. It was good effort; it wasn’t lack of effort,” Hall coach Mike Filippini said. “(Dayton) Ince hit some huge shots for them and (Matt Gustafson) hit some deep 3s. We’re so dang small that when we get a stop we can’t get a rebound or a tipped ball and Kewanee gets their hands on it. It’s frustrating, but we’ve got to keep playing.

“Kewanee’s record is what it is (14-3) because they’re a good team. It’s not like we got beat by a bad team.”

Hall staked the 19-18 lead after the opening eight minutes behind five points apiece from Erick Fuentes and Brett Fanning.

But the Boilermakers started to pick up steam fueled by four second-quarter 3-pointers from Gustafson.

The senior guard finished the frame with back-to-back treys in the final 30 seconds — including a bomb at the buzzer — to give Kewanee a 23-13 scoring advantage in the second quarter as the Red Devils began to cool off offensively.

The cooling trend continued after intermission for the Red Devils as Hall’s offense sputtered with eight points in the third quarter as Kewanee extended its advantage to 54-31.

The worst was yet to come for the Red Devils as they tallied only six points in the final eight minutes en route to the blowout defeat.

Fanning scored a game-high 22 points for Hall on 8-of-19 shooting from the field, 4-for-7 from the foul line. Miguel Villarreal hauled in a team-best eight rebounds to go along with five points for the Red Devils (5-12).

Kewanee freshman forward Dalton Oliver — the MVP of the Marseilles Holiday Tournament — led the Boilermakers with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 free throws. The 6-foot-4 rookie big man made it a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds.

Kewanee senior Brandon Nanninga added 12 points as did Gustafson, who finished 4-for-7 behind the 3-point arc with all his makes coming in the deciding second frame. Dalton Nuding had 10 points as well for Kewanee.
