Basketball: Ottawa sweeps Dixon

OTTAWA — Ottawa swept a doubleheader Friday with Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division opponent Dixon as the Lady Pirates opened the night with a 47-34 victory, while the boys held on for a 50-47 victory to close out the evening at Kingman Gym.

Dixon went 0-5 last week in the Plano Christmas Classic, while Ottawa went 5-0 and claimed the championship, but that disparity was not obvious Friday.

“We really didn’t play well tonight in any aspect,” Pirate coach Mark Cooper said. “We talked about this all week long not to take these guys lightly, but we just didn’t seem to have the energy level tonight that we had in Plano. We have to get better if want to win games from here on out.”

The Pirates actually trailed the young Dixon squad 30-29 to start the fourth quarter but came out hitting on all cylinders.

Tabor Griglione hit a 3-pointer with the first shot of the quarter to give Ottawa the lead at 32-30.

Moments later, John Carroll converted a layup to push the lead to 34-30.

Carroll picked up four points in the next couple of minutes, but Dixon’s Hayden Ikens hit a 3-pointer to make it a two-point Ottawa lead.

Carroll drained his own 3-pointer seconds later to once again push the Ottawa lead back to four points.

A drive by Ikens and a stick back from Laron Carr made it a 45-43 Ottawa lead.
The Pirates could’ve put the game away for good, but missed several free throws to keep the Dukes close.

Carr tied the game at 47-47, but the Pirates hit three free throws late and blocked Call Jarrett to end the game.

Carroll led all scorers with 20 points.

“Ottawa gave themselves several second chance points tonight,” Dixon coach Jason Mead said. “Then we had some mental lapses at end that really hurt us.”

Ottawa 48, Dixon 34
The Lady Pirates survived a scorching hot second-half shooting performance from Brooke Bailey to come away with a 47-34 NIB 12 West victory.

“I think Brooke Bailey showed why she is one of the best players if not the best player in the conference,” Lady Pirate coach Mike Cooper said. “I thought Jessica Wignes played her great the last three minutes of the game to help us get the job done.”

The game was close to start the fourth quarter with Ottawa leading 29-27.

Jaleesa Kindred continued her solid game by connecting on an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Lady Pirates a 32-27 lead.

A minute later, Bailey made a step back 3-pointer, but Cassidy Rice hit back-to-back layups for a 38-32 Ottawa lead.

Catie Carlson picked up 10 of her 13 points in the second half, and her sixth fourth-quarter points gave Ottawa a 41-32 lead.

Jessica Wignes had a left-handed hook shot that helped cap off the 18-4 fourth quarter.

Ottawa led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter behind a Kindred stick back and a Lindsey Greene 3-pointer.

Kacie Dillow’s layup with 2:30 left in the second quarter were the Duchesses first points of the period as they trailed Ottawa 19-9 after Greene hit another 3-pointer to end the half.

The third quarter belonged to Bailey as she hit 5-of-6 shots in the third for 10 points.

Kindred led Ottawa with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Carlson had 13 points and Mady Toynton had 10 rebounds for the Lady Pirates.

Bailey led all scorers with 21 points.
