OTTAWA — The Marquette girls basketball team got an all-around solid team effort Thursday night in Bader Gymnasium for a 47-32 Tri-County Conference victory over Roanoke-Benson/Lowpoint-Washburn and move to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
“This was a workman-type effort tonight,” Lady Crusader coach Todd Hopkins said. “Give (Roanoke-Benson) credit, they did what they had to tonight and kept it close throughout the game. I thought we did a nice job for the most part taking care of the ball, but we have a few things we can work on before Saturday.”
Right out of the gate, Kendall Kaufmann was aggressive hitting two runners in the lane. She also picked up an assist to helpMarquettebuild a 10-0 lead.
Alissa Meinhold then made a short jumper and a 3-pointer that cut the Lady Crusaders’ lead to 12-6 heading into the second quarter.
Madison Hadley got the Rockets on a bit of rally with two buckets and several rebounds that helped cut the deficit to 18-12.
The Lady Crusaders responded and Marissa Gama’s 3-pointer to pushed the lead back to double digits at 34-22.
Riley Bongartz and Angela Evola also got into the scoring column to help the Lady Crusaders to a 38-24 lead heading into the final quarter.
Roanoke-Benson committed several turnovers in the fourth quarter and throughout the game thanks to the Lady Crusaders’ defense, which led to the 47-32 victory.
“It’s nice to start the year out with a win and a conference victory, too,”Hopkinssaid. “This is where we wanted to be. We are over .500 and getting better each game.”
Kaufmann led all scorers with 12 points, while Alice Salt had eight points and 20 rebounds. The Rockets were led by Meinhold with eight points and 13 rebounds.
