Prep of the Week: Amy Devitt

NT Sports Staff

Name: Amy Devitt

School: Mendota

Year: Sophomore

Sport: Basketball

Position: Center

Nickname:
Some of the older girls in school call me ‘Schmamy.’ It started in volleyball and kind of stuck.

What’s one thing you do that drives your coach nuts the most?: During practice, I like to get basketballs stuck in the rafters and stuck on top of anything you can get things stuck on. I can get anything stuck anywhere. If you can find anywhere in the gym where it’s possible, I've done it.

What’s your dream car?: Any one I’m lucky enough to get when my license time comes around. I get it soon so I’m counting down the days.

Last week’s accomplishments: Devitt was a force to be reckoned with all week at St. Bede’s Lady Bruins Christmas Classic. After a strong start to the tournament, Devitt had 26 points and six rebounds in Thursday’s pool-clinching win over Fieldcrest. On Friday, she scored 22 points in a victory over Henry. She then had her best game of the tournament in Saturday’s title game win over St. Bede. In the championship, she scored 32 points and hauled in 10 rebounds. In all, she averaged 26.7 points per game last week and averaged 23.4 per game for the tournament.

Devitt on her performance: As a team, we played really well together. That’s when we play our best, when we’re all working hard together — working as a team and not just one person. We were all pushing and finding our lanes and hitting the open shots. We know each other so well that even if a play breaks down we can find open spots and work something out.

Coach Kevin Geldon says: She just competed tremendously well. Offensively, her numbers speak for themselves. Certainly since I’ve been here we haven’t had somebody score that many points in that stretch. It was a huge boost for us. It seems like she gets better every game. Not just scoring, but defensively and rebounding and her court awareness and understanding. We’re more excited about that. Hopefully, she continues to get better.
