Roundup: Putnam County girls basketball wins Princeville tournament

A dominant third quarter propelled the Putnam County girls basketball team to a 54-28 victory Friday over Roanoke-Benson/Lowpoint-Washburn on the final day of the Princeville Holiday Tournament.

The Lady Panthers led just 25-22 at halftime before outscoring the Lady Rockets 19-2 in the third quarter.

Putnam County capped its dominating second half with a 10-4 advantage in the final eight minutes.

With the win, the Lady Panthers (15-2) finished 3-0 in the round robin tournament to win the championship.

Junior Carly Gonet scored a game-high 18 points, while classmate Daniela Pavlovich added 16 points.

Marquette 56, Somonauk 36
The Lady Crusaders took control early Friday en route to a 20-point victory at the Amboy Holiday Tournament.

Marquette took a 15-7 lead after the first quarter and led 34-18 at halftime.
Marissa Gama scored a game-high 17 points, while Allison Taylor added 12 for Marquette (9-6), which will face Plano at 7:30 tonight in the championship game.

Mercer County 40, Bureau Valley 37
The Storm got their offense going better than they have all tournament but came up just short Friday in the Warkins Classic at Erie.

Nicole Bornsheuer scored a team-high 15 points, while Heaven Bennett added 12 for BV.

BOYS BASKETBALL
At Pekin
La Salle-Peru won a game at the Pekin Holiday Tournament for the first time as the Cavaliers hung on to beat Freeport 51-47 Friday night.

The win snaps a 10-game losing streak for the Cavs in their third year in the tournament.

In their first game Friday, the Cavs fell 74-72 to No. 2-seeded Rockford Boylan in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Jens Soderholm exploded for half the team’s points, scoring a game-high 36 on 12-of-32 shooting from the floor and 9-of-12 shooting from the free throw line.

Noah Lamboley knocked down 5-of-10 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, while Jeremy Brolley added 10 points.

Brock Stull scored 28 points to lead Boylan.

At Princeville
Henry junior Nathan Helle scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second half Friday as the Mallards turned a tied game at the half into a 43-32 victory over Brimfield in the third-place game of the Princeville Holiday Tournament.

The Mallards outscored Brimfield 17-10 in the third quarter and 9-5 in the fourth quarter.

Jake Schlosser added 12 points for Henry (12-2).

In other tournament action, three DePue players scored in double figures as the Little Giants claimed the consolation championship with a 42-37 victory over North Fulton.

Isaac Reyes scored a team-high 14 points, Jesse Lopez had 13 points and Austin Zimmer added 11 points.
