Prep of the Week: Ottawa's Tanner Boaz

NT Sports Staff

Name: Tanner Boaz

School: Ottawa

126 pounds

Some people call me Boazy

Before every match, I put on my headgear and make our heavyweight Sean Taulbee slap the crap out of my head real hard for about 10 seconds. Then when I go out on the mat, I slap my left leg, then my right, then both legs and then I jump up and do like a high knees thing with both legs.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?:
I love ice cream so this is a very hard time of the year for me (to not eat it in order to make weight). My parents bought me an ice cream maker last year for Christmas.

What’s your guilty-pleasure TV show?:
Every now and then, I’ll watch ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ on TLC with my girlfriend.

Last week’s accomplishments:
Boaz had an impressive week as the 126-pounder went 7-0 in duals for the Pirates. On Thursday, he earned a pin and recorded a 4-0 decision. At Saturday’s Niles North Super Duals, Boaz went 5-0 as he had three pins, a technical fall and a decision.

Boaz on his performance:
I was really trying to push myself because last year I was injury-prone with a torn back and a broken wrist, which I ended up getting a screw in. Over the summer, I didn’t get a chance to do a lot of training so I came into the year more focused than in the past. I think this year, I just have a little more drive in me to push and help my team.

Coach Peter Marx says:
Last week he stepped up to the challenge all week long. He was one of our go-to guys, and every time he went to the mat we had confidence that he would get a win. He had a very solid week of wrestling. He didn’t put himself in danger. He went out and was aggressive, got takedowns and took control of the matches from the very beginning.
