Roundup: PC boys basketball tops Roanoke-Benson

The Putnam County boys basketball team opened its home season in style on Friday.

After playing their first six games on the road, the Panthers earned a 53-43 Tri-County Conference victory Friday against Roanoke-Benson.

The Panthers outscored the Rockets 33-19 in the middle two quarters.

PC led comfortably most of the second half despite never being able to deliver the knock out blow.

Harold Fay had a game-high 16 points for the Panthers (3-4, 1-0 TCC), while Xavier Warren added 11 points.

“Nobody had a real good game offensively,” PC coach Josh Nauman said. “They played real good defense and forced a lot of turnovers. Still, it was a good win for us, and we kind of grinded it out.”

The Panthers did, however, lose post Kyle Edgcomb, who broke his hand in the home opener.

DePue 50, Lowpoint-Washburn 36
The Little Giants built a first-quarter lead and never trailed as DePue earned a TCC win Friday in Washburn.

Jose Raya had a game-high 20 points for the Little Giants, while Isaac Reyes added 14 points.

Henry 56, Midland 37
The Mallards had four kids score in double figures as they rolled to a TCC win Friday in Varna.

Trent Richards scored a game-high 15 points for Henry, while Nathan Helle added 12 points. Kyle Henderson and Ryan Condit both chipped in 11.

Henry held Midland to just four points in the first quarter and 11 total points in the first half.

Fieldcrest 62, Tri-Valley 49
Up by two points after the third quarter, the Knights exploded in the fourth quarter as they outscored Tri-Valley 23-12 in the final frame to earn a Heart of Illinois Conference win Friday in Minonk.

Fieldcrest seniors Brady Sanders and Kyle Crowley both had a game-high 19 points. Crowley scored nine points in the fourth, while Sanders added seven.

The Knights (2-0, 1-0 HOIC) hit eight 3-point shots and went 12-for-14 from the foul line.

Bureau Valley 52, Amboy 40
The Storm earned the Three Rivers Athletic Conference victory Friday in Amboy.

Woodland 49, Marquette 47
The Crusaders lost a TCC heartbreaker Friday in Ottawa.

Marquette took a 24-23 lead at half but was outscored 16-11 in the third quarter.
The Crusaders outscored Woodland 12-10 in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as they fell.

Austin McDonnell had a game-high 14 points for Marquette (2-4, 0-1 TCC), which hit five 3-point shots.

Serena 41, LaMoille-Ohio 27
Brandon Morris had 14 points and 15 rebounds, but the Lions dropped the Little Ten Conference contest Friday in LaMoille.

Julian Gonzalez added nine points for L-O.

Hinckley-Big Rock 91, Leland-Earlville 68
Senior Dan Pfaff had 19 points and Nolan Baumbach added 14 points, but the Panthers fell in a Little Ten Conference game Friday in Leland.

Andrew Walsh chipped in 12 points for L-E (1-5, 0-1 LTC).

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Mendota 47, Winnebago 40
Amy Devitt scored a game-high 20 points as the Lady Trojans earned the Big Northern Conference West Division win Friday in Winnebago.

Karly Near added 10 points for MHS, while Abby Bromenschenkel had nine points.

Mendota took a 15-7 lead after the first quarter and increased it to 29-17 at halftime before it closed out the conference victory in the second half.
