Girls basketball: IVC tops Princeton

Brad Martin
NewsTribune Sports Writer

PRINCETON — Any time you have a young varsity team the head coach is looking for  improvement from game to game. That’s exactly what first-year head coach Kevin Hieronymous is getting from Princeton as the Tigresses fell 54-43 Thursday night at Prouty Gymnasium in Princeton to the Chillicothe IVC Lady Grey Ghosts.

After taking some lumps against two other Class 3A schools in the past week, the Tigresses were hoping that would be evident in the game against the Lady Grey Ghosts.

And that’s exactly what happened Thursday night as the Tigresses held 34-32 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

“You know I don’t want the girls to get discouraged,” Hieronymous said. “I think playing those other two schools only helped tonight and it will help us come playoff time. I just hope the girls realize we just need to stay focused.”

Zoe Mead had a nice game for the Tigresses and her two baskets in the third quarter gave Princeton a 30-25 lead.

Three consecutive PHS turnovers though provided IVC with a 6-0 run to briefly retake the lead at 31-30. But moments later, McCaela May drained a 3-pointer to give the Tigresses a 34-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“McCaela is a very good shooter and we keep telling her that she is,” Hieronymous said. “We keep trying to convince her that she is and tonight I thought she believed in herself and she was really asking for the ball and we need to see more of that.”

The momentum quickly changed in the final stanza after another May shot from behind the arc. Then it was the Lady Grey Ghosts who went on a 19-5 run that helped fuel they IVC victory.

Brenner Garner collected a pair of steals and six more points in the quarter that allowed the Grey Ghosts to put away the Tigresses for good.

IVC led early as Brooke Rydolph scored six points to open the second quarter with a 17-9 lead.

Mead led Princeton with 10 points while Sears had 17 rebounds. May finished with seven points.
