2012 Defensive Football All-Area Team

Nathan Helle, River Valley

Year: Junior
Season highlights: Helle moved from linebacker to defensive end this season and wreaked havoc on opposing offenses. Despite missing two games with injury, Helle finished third on the team in tackles with 30 solo tackles and 22 assisted. Helle, a Second-Team All-Conference pick in the Lincoln Trail, also had six tackles for loss.

Jon Hewitt, La Salle-Peru

Year: Junior
Season highlights: The 5-foot-11, 260-pounder had a knack for getting into the opponent's backfield, finishing with eight tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks, which ranked second in the area. He racked up 30 tackles - 23 solo and seven assisted. Hewitt was named All-Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division.

Cyrano Rayfield, Ottawa
Year: Junior
Season highlights: The NT Defensive Player of the Year was a force  at defensive end. Rayfield, who was voted Defensive MVP in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division, finished with 77 tackles (34 solo, 33 assisted), two sacks and a fumble recovery in 11 games (Sycamore stats not available).

Austin Schwab, St. Bede
Year: Senior
Season highlights: Schwab showed versatility this season as he played defensive end and linebacker. The First-Team All-Big Rivers Conference selection made 41 solo tackles and assisted on 47 others. He also had four tackles for a loss and a sack for a Bruin defense that allowed 19.1 points per game.

Taylor Steele, Hall
Year: Senior
Season highlights: Steele proved to be a disruptive presence as he moved from nose guard to defensive end this season. The anchor of the Red Devil defense made 85 stops while recording 11 tackles for loss and four sacks. Steele also forced a fumble. He was an All-Big Rivers Conference Second-Team pick.

Michael Bellino, St. Bede
Year: Junior
Season highlights: Bellino was a tackling machine, racking up 75 solo stops and 82 assisted tackles. He also made 11 tackles in the backfield and recorded a pair of sacks. The All-Big Rivers Conference First-Team selection forced three fumbles and recovered three fumbles.

Kristian Konneck, Bureau Valley
Year: Senior
Season highlights: The Storm middle linebacker made a habit of chasing down quarterbacks this fall, racking up an area-best six sacks. Konneck finished with 92 total tackles and one fumble recovery. He was named honorable mention all-conference in the Big Rivers.

Brandon Pietrowski, St. Bede
Year: Senior
Season highlights: Pietrowski was a regular visitor to opposing backfields this season, recording six tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He finished with 61 solo stops and 70 assisted tackles. Pietrowski was voted Second-Team All-Conference in the Big Rivers.

Seth Schiffbauer, La Salle-Peru
Year: Senior
Season highlights: The Cavalier middle linebacker came up with a bunch of big plays for L-P as he had four tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. The All-Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division pick finished with 75 tackles.

Tyler Skolek, Ottawa
Year: Senior
Season highlights: Skolek manned the middle for the area's second-best defense. He led the Pirates in tackles with 68 assisted stops and 18 solo tackles in 11 games (Sycamore stats not available). Skolek, an All-Northern Illinois Big 12 West selection, also made 2.5 sacks.

Defensive backs
Trae Blumhorst, Mendota
Year: Senior
Season highlights: Blumhorst was capable of coming up in run support or shutting down the opposing passing attack. He led the Trojans in tackles with 37 solo, 31 assisted and 1/2 a tackle for loss, while also intercepting an area-best five passes.

Brian Lange, Bureau Valley
Year: Senior
Season highlights: Lange was a steady presence in the defensive backfield for the Storm. He finished sixth on the team with 82 tackles and intercepted three passes, which he returned for 29 yards. Lange was named Second-Team All-Conference in the Big Rivers.

Billy Vickers, La Salle-Peru
Year: Senior
Season highlights: Vickers was a solid last line of defense, racking up a team-best 79 tackles (57 solo, 22 assisted). He also was strong in pass defense as he finished with three interceptions and six passes defended. The All-Northern Illinois Big 12 West pick also forced three fumbles.

Logan Zeman, La Salle-Peru
Year: Junior
Season highlights: Opposing quarterbacks didn't have much luck throwing to Zeman's side of the field as he defended seven passes and made four interceptions. He finished with 40 tackles and forced a fumble. He was voted All-Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division.

Will Hoffman, Ottawa
Year: Senior
Season highlights: Hoffman was named all-conference in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division as a punter. He also played quarterback and defensive back, helping Ottawa to an 11-1 record, a NIB 12 West Division title and a Class 6A quarterfinal berth.
